External Examiners - Overseas Registration Examination (ORE)
Employed status: Worker
Location: Homebased (plus travel to exams where appropriate)
Salary: £176.50 per half day plus expenses
The General Dental Council (GDC) is the UK-wide statutory regulator of the dental profession. We protect patients by ensuring all dentists and dental care professionals are qualified, competent, and registered with us.
External examiners are registered dentists who attend each sitting of the ORE and provide reports to the ORE Advisory Group to assist in its academic quality assurance. The ORE is an exam that overseas qualified dentists have to pass in order to register with the GDC. Registration allows dentists to practice dentistry unsupervised in the UK.
Responsibilities will include:
- Approving draft papers and details of tests
- Reporting on any amendments
- Ensuring questions conform with GDC guidelines for the assessment of candidates
This role is homebased with frequent travel, and overnight stays will often be required during examinations at education and training institutions across the UK.
About you
You will need to be a dentist registered with the General Dental Council, either in practice or retired for less than 2 years. You will also require experience of dental undergraduate examining, plus working knowledge of current guidance on the UK undergraduate dental curriculum and standards, as well as contemporary evidence-based assessment methods.
Time commitment
Due to the nature of the role, the worker agrees to provide services on an ad-hoc basis without any mutuality of obligations on either side. The GDC would normally expect External Examiners to be prepared to undertake approx. 6 days per year and at least a 1 day workshop every 18 months. This role will have a tenure of 3 years with the potential for a further 2-year extension.
