This is a hybrid role, with two days in our London office every week. We’re looking for an experienced VP of Engineering to take on a key role leading the team working on our mobile, web and desktop products.

Since its launch in 2018, Gener8 has been at the forefront of the “open data” movement: the belief that people should be able to control and be rewarded from their own data. Gener8’s consumer products include iOS and Android apps, a web browser and a browser extension. Our products enable people to transparently share their data with Gener8, whilst preserving their privacy, and to earn rewards in return for doing this. Today we’re operating in the UK & USA and will be launching in multiple new countries in early 2026. On the B2B side, the data products that Gener8 creates enables businesses to make faster, smarter decisions. Our customers include some of the world’s largest Big Tech companies, leading AI companies and prominent organisations in finance and ad tech.

We’re growing our engineering team following the commercial success we’ve had this year and to help with that we’re looking for an experienced VP of Engineering. You’ll be reporting to the CTO, helping to guide the strategy, growth and execution of the team.

A few of the things that you could be working on:

  • Mentoring and coaching the senior and lead engineers to grow their technical and soft skills.
  • Driving observability, reliability, stability and scalability as concepts within the organisation and establishing the metrics, SLAs and OKRs that ensure they’re achieved.
  • Auditing ways of working, technical capabilities, looking for optimisations or overhauls if necessary and leading improvement programmes.
  • Defining the new roles that will enable the team to execute even faster and more effectively, as well as running the hiring process, from application, offer to onboarding.
  • Shaping the product and engineering roadmap and seeing initiatives through from conception to delivery while ensuring engineering capacity, sequencing, trade-offs and cross-team alignment are managed at an organisational level.
  • Owning and evolving the engineering org structure, career framework and performance management processes.
  • Partnering with the CTO and leadership team on budgeting, headcount planning and long-term technical investments.

On the frontend we’re using React, Next.js and TypeScript. On the backend we use Golang to serve RESTful and gRPC APIs running on Kubernetes. Our mobile apps have been built natively from the ground up using Swift and Kotlin. We use GitHub for version control and CI, Jira for tracking tasks and Slack for communication.

Responsibilities:

  • Overseeing and helping define the technical architecture at a strategic level, ensuring alignment with business goals and long‑term platform evolution.
  • Providing technical leadership and able to be hands on and in the detail when needed.
  • Line management, mentoring and coaching the other engineers.
  • Running the hiring process for new engineers.
  • Reviewing other engineer’s code, making suggestions and using them as teaching opportunities for more advanced techniques.
  • Spotting the gaps in technical capabilities or resources and filling them at the right time.
  • Working closely with the product, marketing and sales teams to bring their visions to life while balancing innovation, delivery velocity, technical debt and platform sustainability.
  • Owning engineering delivery performance: throughput, predictability, quality and operational excellence.
  • Championing a strong engineering culture, values and ways of working as the organisation scales.

This is the right opportunity for you if you have:

  • 7+ years experience as a software engineer working with native mobile or web technologies.
  • 3+ years experience in an engineering leadership role with line management responsibilities.
  • Previous experience at a growing startup.
  • Track record of delivering high quality products with a measurable impact on the business.
  • Experience building engaged and high performing teams.
  • Experience interviewing engineers and assessing technical tasks for applicants.
  • Experience mentoring and helping level up other engineers.
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
  • British citizenship or a pre‑existing right to work in the UK.
