Gencell Technical Services are seeking an experienced Automation Engineer to support the design, development, and implementation of automation systems on a state-of-the-art biopharmaceutical facility based in the North of the UK. The role is fully onsite.
This role is focused on automation engineering, system integration, and design delivery, rather than commissioning activities. You will play a key role in ensuring automation systems are robust, compliant, and aligned with GMP requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Support the design and development of automation architecture for process and utility systems
- Develop and review functional specifications (FDS), design specifications (DDS), and control philosophies
- Configure and develop DeltaV control systems, including modules, phases, and batch logic
- Support integration of BMS and process control systems into the wider automation environment
- Work closely with process, electrical, and mechanical teams to ensure seamless system integration
- Review and approve vendor automation documentation and software deliverables
- Participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, and risk assessments relating to automation systems
- Ensure automation systems are designed in line with GMP and data integrity requirements (e.g. ALCOA+)
- Support FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing) activities with vendors and internal stakeholders
- Provide technical input into automation standards, templates, and best practices
- Assist in change control processes and manage updates to system design documentation
- Coordinate with project stakeholders to ensure timely delivery of automation milestones
- Support handover documentation and system readiness for downstream CQV teams
Skill Requirements
- Degree qualified in Automation, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline
- Proven experience in automation engineering within pharmaceutical or life sciences environments
- Strong hands-on experience with Emerson DeltaV systems
- Experience in automation design, configuration, and system integration
- Knowledge of GMP environments and regulatory expectations
- Experience producing and reviewing automation design documentation (FDS, DDS, etc.)
- Familiarity with BMS systems and utility automation
- Strong understanding of data integrity and compliance standards
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary project team
- Previous experience on large-scale capital projects or greenfield facilities is advantageous
