About the Company
Our client is an established and award-winning transport and logistics provider delivering large-scale haulage, logistics and warehousing services throughout the UK and Ireland. Due to continued growth, they are seeking an experienced Transport Planner to join their busy operations team based in Ballymena.
The Role
The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and coordinating full-load vehicle movements across the UK and Ireland. Working closely with drivers, subcontractors, customers and internal departments, you will ensure all loads are planned efficiently, delivered on time and completed in line with legal and operational requirements. This is a fast-paced role requiring strong geographical knowledge, excellent communication skills and the ability to resolve live operational issues calmly and effectively.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, schedule and optimise daily full-load vehicle movements across the UK and Ireland.
- Allocate work to drivers and subcontractors based on availability, location and operational requirements.
- Communicate effectively with drivers, customers, subcontractors and internal teams.
- Monitor the progress of live jobs and provide regular updates to relevant parties.
- Ensure customer service levels, delivery deadlines and compliance requirements are maintained.
- Provide drivers with clear pre-briefs and complete debriefs following each journey.
- Respond quickly to delays, breakdowns, route changes and other live operational issues.
- Update transport plans throughout the day to reflect changing operational requirements.
- Maintain accurate records of vehicle movements, delivery information and driver activity.
- Support KPI reporting and monitor transport performance.
- Ensure compliance with tachograph regulations, drivers hours legislation and the Working Time Directive.
- Assist the wider transport team with additional operational duties when required.
Essential Criteria
- Previous experience within transport planning, full-load planning, fleet coordination or a similar logistics role.
- Good knowledge of UK and Ireland geography.
- Understanding of tachograph regulations, drivers hours and the Working Time Directive.
- Strong planning, organisational and prioritisation skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm and make effective decisions in a fast-paced environment.
- Proactive and solutions-focused approach.
- Good IT skills and experience using transport management or planning systems.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Desirable Criteria
- Previous experience planning full-load haulage movements.
- Experience working with subcontracted hauliers.
- Transport Manager CPC qualification, although this is not essential.
- Previous experience within a high-volume UK and Ireland transport operation.
Working Hours
The standard working hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00am - 6:00pm. The successful candidate will also be required to work: One Saturday in three, finishing at approximately lunchtime. One on-call shift in six. Additional hours after 6:00pm when operationally required. An additional rate will be paid for Saturday work and any hours worked after 6:00pm.
