A Legal 500 law firm and one of the UK's largest providers of Legal Aid services are seeking Junior Law Costs Draftsmen to join their established Billing and Costs Department, which comprises of 30 staff based in the City of London. Our client serves corporate entities and private individuals in over 25 practice areas from offices throughout London and across England and Wales. Our client’s accomplishments are acknowledged and recommended in The Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners, as a top tier firm.
Main Responsibilities of the Role:
- Report directly to Manager
- Drafting/preparing inter parties bills of costs, costs budgets; and of reply/dispute
- Drafting inter parties bills with Legal Aid element
- Drafting Claim1’s, 1a’s VHCC/HCCP case
- Drafting of estimates of costs to accompany Allocation Questionnaires and Pre-Trial Checklists
- Negotiations of Bills including attendance at CCMC’s
- Overseeing the Issuing of the Notice of Commencement and associated documents
- Working to deadlines
- Attendance upon Detailed Assessment Hearing as and when necessary
- Providing technical/costs guidance to fee earners where required
- Assist members of the team to complete post-assessment work, with training and ad hoc queries
- Maintaining accurate time costing procedures
- Implementing any recommendations made by your supervisor following monthly meetings ensuring that these are dealt with promptly
- Ensuring compliance with file management
Key Skills Required:
- Good attention to detail
- Able to draft legal costs documents and budgets
- Strong communication, teamwork, and numerical skills
- Self-motivated with the ability to work to tight deadlines
- Ability to risk assess
- Ability to provide sound advice to clients
- Strong legal knowledge, especially in Legal Aid and Part 8 procedure
- Proactive, willing to learn, and use initiative
- Excellent IT skills with ability to process information using relevant software (databases, spreadsheet packages)
- Skilled in Microsoft Office; Costs Master experience is a plus
- Previous experience on billing claims to the LAA will be essential
