Abouttherole:
Thecandidatewillundertakeamixedcaseloadofcomplaintsandcivilclaimsagainstthepoliceandotherpublicauthorities,judicialreviews,inquestsandinjustices.Thedepartmenthasbeenexpandingwithinthefirmsteadilyforanumberofyearsandattractshighprofileandinterestingwork.
Thesuccessfulcandidatewillconductsupervisedcaseworkandalsosupportotherlawyersinthedepartment.Youwillbeinvolvedwithcasepreparationgenerallyand,aspartofthatrole,willbeexpectedtoconductlegalresearch,takeproofsofevidencefromclientsandwitnesses,attendbothcourthearingsandconferences
Itisimperativethatyoucandemonstrateanunwaveringcommitmenttoprotectingindividualcitizens’civillibertiesandapreparednesstofighthardtoenforcetheirhumanrights.Previousexperienceinthisspecificareaishighlydesirablebutallapplicationswillbeconsidered.
Dutiesandresponsibilities
- ReportdirectlytotheDepartmentDirector
- Professionalpro-activeapproach,strongclientcareskillsandasensitiveandsympatheticunderstandingofclientneeds
- Responsibleformixedcaseloadofinquestwork,complaintsagainstpublicauthoritiesandpreandpost-issueclaimantlitigation.
- Abilitytomanageappropriatecaseloadtypesandsupervisionofasmallteam.
- MakingCCMSapplicationstotheLAA.
- Attendingclients,takinginstructionsandbriefingandliaisingwithcounsel,negotiatingwithdefendants,theIOPCandotherlegalprofessionals.
- Dealingwithcorrespondence.
- Identifyingthefundingoptionsandadvisingonthemostappropriateone.
- Torunthecaseloadofvaried,challengingandinterestingwork.
- Abilitytohelpinmarketingthedepartmentandthefirmthroughsocialmedia.
- Assistinginexpansionofthedepartment.
Experienceandqualifications
- QualifiedSolicitorwith5+years'PQE.
- Provensupervisoryexperience,includingmanaginglegalteamsordepartments.
- Experiencehandlingpubliclyfundedmatters,includingCW1/LegalHelpandLicensed/CertificatedWork.
- PracticalexperienceusingtheClientandCostManagementSystem(CCMS).
- Demonstrableexperienceacrossclaimantlitigationmatters.
- StrongworkingknowledgeoftheCivilProcedureRules(CPR).
- Experienceandunderstandingofjudicialreviewapplications.
- Excellentlegalresearch,analytical,andcriticalthinkingskills.
- Strongorganisationalandtime-managementabilities,withthecapacitytoworkeffectivelyunderpressureandtotightdeadlines.
- AbilitytomeetLAASupervisorCriteriaforLegalAidcontractpurposes.
