The Yard Operator is responsible for the day-to-day organisation and operation of the Head Office yard.

The Yard Operator plays a key role in maintaining a safe, clean and well-organised environment while ensuring equipment is ready for hire and returned equipment is processed efficiently.

Key Responsibilities Yard Operations

  • Maintain a clean, safe and organised yard at all times.
  • Clean large plant prior to dispatch.
  • Receive returned equipment and store safely ready for inspection
  • Identify and report any damage, defects or missing items.
  • Move equipment safely around the depot using authorised plant and machinery.
  • Store equipment in designated locations to maximise efficiency and accessibility.
  • Ensure all equipment is clearly labelled and correctly identified.
  • Transport Support
  • Assist drivers with loading and unloading vehicles.
  • Ensure all loads are prepared and ready for scheduled deliveries.
  • Secure equipment safely for transport.
  • Support vehicle turnaround to minimise delays.
  • Yard operations
  • Ensure skip area is always clean and tidy
  • Advise and assist trades when they return waste to the yard
  • Ensure waste is disposed of in the correct skips efficiently
  • Safely operate the mixed waste compactor
  • Safely operate waste timber shredder
  • Ensure all areas of our carparks and pavements are swept and weed free
  • Apply salt to roads and walkways in winter months
  • Workshop Support
  • Assist technicians with basic preparation work.
  • Help maintain workshop housekeeping standards when required.
  • Customer Service
  • Greet customers collecting or returning equipment.
  • Assist customers with loading vehicles where authorised.
  • Provide a professional and courteous service.
  • Direct customer queries to the appropriate department.
  • Yard Maintenance
  • Keep the yard & carparks free from hazards and obstructions.
  • Ensure designated storage areas remain tidy.
  • Monitor yard security and report concerns.
  • Carry out routine yard maintenance tasks.
  • Previous experience working in a construction, plant hire, warehouse or yard environment.
  • Good understanding of safe manual handling practices.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Positive attitude with a strong work ethic.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Desirable Qualifications & Experience

  • Plant operating experience.
  • Banksman or Vehicle Marshal training.
  • CSCS Card.
  • Experience within the plant hire or construction industry.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge.

  • Follow safe operating procedures when using plant and lifting equipment.
  • Report hazards, accidents and near misses immediately using the Gelder accident reporting app.
  • Ensure safe segregation of pedestrians and vehicles within the yard.
  • Support the company's commitment to maintaining a safe working environment.
