The Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced Project Manager to join a growing civil engineering contractor delivering a strong pipeline of work across the water and wider infrastructure sectors. This is a hands-on delivery role with a strong focus on civil engineering, below-ground pipework, earthworks and construction. You will take ownership of projects from initial scoping and planning through to construction, handover and completion, working closely with clients, site teams, subcontractors and the wider project team. The business currently has approximately £5 - £6 million of work in the pipeline, with multiple projects already underway and further schemes secured across the South of England. You will work alongside an experienced Construction Manager and take responsibility for coordinating site delivery teams, including Supervisors, General Foremen and subcontractors. The majority of current projects are located north of the M25, across Hertfordshire and North London, with the wider workload extending across the Thames Water, Southern Water and Wessex Water regions, as well as projects reaching as far north as Peterborough. There will also be opportunities to support general civil engineering and infrastructure projects outside the water sector, including data centre-related works.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take overall responsibility for the successful delivery of civil engineering and water projects from initial scope through to completion.
  • Review client requirements and support the scoping, planning and mobilisation of projects.
  • Manage the delivery of civil engineering, below-ground pipework, earthworks and associated construction packages.
  • Lead and coordinate Supervisors, General Foremen, subcontractors and site delivery teams.
  • Work directly with clients and major contractors, including organisations such as Costain and Galliford Try.
  • Monitor project programme, costs, quality, resources and overall performance.
  • Ensure project documentation, construction records and reporting requirements are completed and maintained.
  • Manage project risks, variations, commercial issues and changes throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Ensure works are delivered safely and in accordance with HSE, CDM and relevant industry requirements.
  • Support and oversee self-delivered construction activities.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with clients, suppliers, subcontractors and internal teams.
  • Provide effective leadership and ensure site teams have the information, resources and support required to deliver.
  • Contribute to the successful delivery of wider civil engineering and infrastructure schemes outside the water sector.

About You

We are looking for a delivery-focused Project Manager with a strong civil engineering background. Water experience is highly desirable, but the key requirement is proven experience managing civil construction projects. You will ideally have:

  • Previous experience as a Project Manager within water, utilities or civil engineering.
  • A strong background in civil engineering, below-ground pipework, earthworks or infrastructure.
  • Experience delivering capital projects from planning and scoping through to construction and completion.
  • Good understanding of pipework installation, earthworks and associated construction processes.
  • Experience managing site teams, Supervisors, General Foremen and subcontractors.
  • Experience working directly with clients and principal contractors.
  • Strong understanding of construction health & safety, CDM and site compliance.
  • Good commercial awareness, with experience managing costs, variations, risks and programme.
  • Strong communication, organisational and leadership skills.
  • A practical, hands-on approach to project delivery.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel between projects across the South of England.

What's on Offer

£75,000 - £85,000 salary, depending on experience. Strong pipeline of approximately £5 - £6m of work. Opportunity to work across major water and civil engineering projects. Varied project portfolio spanning water, infrastructure, general civils and data centre works. A senior role with genuine responsibility for project delivery and site teams. Long-term opportunity within a growing contractor with an expanding workload.
