Lead Controls and Automation Engineer responsible for delivering control system projects primarily for Marine, Offshore and Naval applications. This technical role involves working with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers to design, implement and test our Controls & Automation Systems solutions to meet customer and marine classification society requirements.
Responsibilities
- Support the engineering activities during the production of control systems from the receipt of an order to handover to the customer after commissioning and testing on the vessel at sea.
- Provide a technical interface to customers, classification societies, and suppliers.
- Produce design, installation, and test documentation and maintain this documentation throughout the project cycle.
- Work with the Drawing Office to produce equipment drawings, electrical wiring diagrams, cable interconnection drawings, and interface schedules.
- Perform the functional design of HMI, PLC Architecture, Networks, and Communications Interfaces using standard hardware and software components.
- Write PLC software using IEC 61131-3 programming languages (e.g., Ladder Diagram, Function Block Diagram, Structured Text, Instruction List, Sequential Function Chart).
- Design, tag, and test control system mimics using HMI SCADA packages.
- Plan and progress design and test activities to meet required delivery dates.
- Manage change during the project lifecycle using appropriate change management processes.
- Perform factory testing of control systems leading to a formal Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) with customer and classification society.
- Support the commissioning and sea-trials phase of the project, normally from the office but with the possibility of visiting the vessel.
- Provide technical advice and assistance to the sales, commissioning, and service teams.
Qualifications
- A relevant degree in Electrical, Electronics or Industrial Control Systems Engineering (or equivalent), or significant relevant experience gained in a professional engineering environment.
- Previous experience of designing and integrating control & automation project solutions.
- Good understanding of programming PLCs.
- Knowledge of industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus RTU/TCP IP, OPC-UA, Profibus, Profinet, etc.).
- Unrestricted Right to Work in the United Kingdom.
What will make you stand out
- Chartered Engineer status or working towards achieving it.
- Knowledge/awareness of Operational Technology (OT) cyber security.
- Basic Knowledge of Functional Safety as per IEC 61508.
- Willingness to travel and spend periods of time on commissioning activities domestically and overseas.
Note: This role involves work for customers who manage critical infrastructure; based on customer requirements it will be necessary to carry out background checks and suitability assessments (UK BPSS clearance OR UK SC clearance) as part of the hiring process.
