Become part of a winning team and help to deliver the Green Energy transition. Activities aimed at proving a concept to be valid or technically feasible by the application of scientific and engineering methodologies. Work in this family typically has the objective of demonstrating through test or analyses the performance and implementation potential of a concept. Responsible for departmental operations planning/execution or is focused on execution of professional activities within a technical discipline. Functions with some autonomy but guided by established policies or review of end results. The job allows modification of procedures and practices covering work as long as the end results meet standards of acceptability (quality, volume, timeliness etc.).

The purpose of the role is to design, analyse, and support testing of mechanical systems and structures for our HVDC Valve products that must meet stringent requirements. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including electrical engineers, cooling engineers, and external compliance experts to ensure that our products are robust, compliant, and manufacturable. Work with the team to prepare documentation packages for tendering and project deliverables. Collaborate with third-parties for materials and parts data and information. Support design reviews and all internal quality requirements. Work with manufacturing, site and quality teams to ensure DFM (Design for Manufacture). Maintain accurate documentation of designs, test results, and engineering change orders.

The successful candidate will be part of a highly motivated, dynamic and rapidly growing team of engineers working on the project activities related to HVDC applications. This is a very exciting and dynamic field of power engineering in which GE’s leading contribution has worldwide recognition. The role gives an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to innovate, expand their skills and personal development within an internationally recognised expert in this exciting field. Whilst ideally based at the HVDC Centre of Excellence in Stafford this role could be located at any of the GE sites but would then involve regular travel to the UK.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Conceptual or theoretical activities related to the principles of engineering, physics, and materials science for the design, analysis, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems.
  • Includes the analysis of static (structural) and dynamic (rotor dynamics, vibrations) behaviour of mechanical systems.
  • Includes direct people management responsibility including staffing and performance development.
  • Utilises in-depth knowledge of a technical discipline and analytical thinking and technical experience to execute policy / strategy.
  • Has knowledge of best practices and how own area integrates with others; is aware of the competition and the factors that differentiate them in the market.
  • Uses some judgment and has some ability to propose different solutions outside of set parameters to address more complicated manufacturing processes with technical variety and/or interdependent production cycles.
  • Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience.
  • May lead small projects with low risks and resource requirements.
  • Explains information; developing skills to bring team members to consensus around topics within field.
  • Conveys performance expectations and may handle sensitive issues.

Required Qualifications

The candidate will probably be educated to degree level in mechanical engineering. However, this is not as important as a proven track record and evidence that you have the experience and abilities to perform the role. Candidates should have proven experience with mechanical analysis and testing for electrical / mechanical equipment. It is key that the candidate has the ability to work quickly and efficiently within an engineering team.

Desired Characteristics

  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse and resolve problems.
  • Ability to document, plan, market, and execute programs.
  • Established project management skills.
