This is an opportunity to work as part of a cross-functional team to deliver product designs that meet customer and project requirements in close conjunction with CAD and Mechanical Engineers and collaborate with Customers and Project Management, Sourcing and Procurement, Manufacturing and Quality teams.
At GE Vernova's Rugby site, we engineer some of the most technically advanced rotating electrical machines in the industry — equipment that sits at the core of the world's energy infrastructure. As a Lead Electrical Engineer, you'll take a leading role in the specification, electromagnetic analysis, and design of large electrical machines, working across a cross-functional team that includes CAD and mechanical engineers, project managers, customers, and manufacturing and quality partners.
This is a role for an experienced electrical machines engineer who combines deep analytical expertise with the confidence to lead complex design programmes and engage directly with customers and stakeholders to deliver real-world solutions.
What You'll Do
- Lead electrical machine design — specify, design, and engineer large rotating electrical machines; interpret and resolve contractual and technical requirements in a timely, quality-focused manner; and create and submit design documentation to communicate and record design progress.
- Drive electromagnetic analysis and simulation — lead detailed analytical and finite element analysis (FEA) programmes using ANSYS/Workbench to assess electromagnetic performance and machine behaviour across a range of operating conditions.
- Improve machine performance — lead design model and prototype test programmes to characterise and improve noise and vibration behaviour; investigate new materials and manufacturing methods to enhance machine competitiveness.
- Collaborate with customers and cross-functional teams — work closely with customers, third parties, CAD engineers, mechanical engineers, project management, sourcing, procurement, manufacturing, and quality teams to understand requirements and deliver effective technical solutions.
- Contribute to engineering excellence — apply and develop knowledge of relevant industry standards and engineering design processes; identify opportunities to advance engineering tools, methods, and practices across the team.
Who We're Looking For
You're an experienced electrical machines engineer with a strong electromagnetic design background, proven analytical capability, and the confidence to lead technical programmes and engage effectively with customers and cross-functional collaborators.
Required
- A Master's or PhD in Electrical Engineering with a focus on electrical machine design. A formal postgraduate qualification is relevant to the depth of electromagnetic analysis required in this role; however, we are equally interested in your total experience and professional achievements — significant, proven experience in a rotating electrical machines engineering environment will be considered.
- Significant experience in rotating electrical machines engineering, including electromagnetic design, analysis, and development.
- Proven expertise in 2D and/or 3D finite element analysis (FEA) for electromagnetic designs, using tools such as ANSYS/Workbench.
- Strong working knowledge of rotating electrical machines — their engineering challenges, performance characteristics, and manufacturing processes.
- Familiarity with relevant industry standards including BS EN, International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 60034, and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 115.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Willingness to travel and work flexibly in line with project and business requirements.
- Legal authorisation to work in the United Kingdom (visa sponsorship availability will be assessed based on business and legal requirements).
Preferred
- Sole British Nationality and current or previous Security Check (SC) clearance (certain project activities may require this).
- Experience with product lifecycle management (PLM) or enterprise resource planning (ERP) software such as Teamcenter or SAP.
- Experience in scheduling, planning, and programme management in an engineering environment.
- Strong influencing and negotiation skills with a track record of delivering results in cross-functional team environments.
