Overview

Join to apply for the Mechanical Design Engineer – Mechanical Engineering role at GE Vernova. Based in Stafford within the HVDC Valve Converter Engineering function, you will be part of a dynamic Mechanical Engineering team focused on the development and deployment of power electronics applications for power systems, particularly HVDC converters and the forthcoming HVDC Grid.

This role offers the opportunity to innovate, expand your design skills, and develop within an internationally recognized company in the exciting field of power engineering. Some international travel to collaborate with other GEV teams, test laboratories, strategic suppliers and contract customers is expected.

Responsibilities

  • Mechanical development and analysis of power electronic converter valves for HVDC & FACTs.
  • Perform mechanical engineering calculations and simulations, focusing on stress analysis of solids.
  • Translate design intent into components such as structural steel, composites, cooling systems, corona shields and insulators, and communicate with stakeholders.
  • Contribute to quality of own work and the team’s output; execute standard technical tasks with some autonomy to adjust task sequencing as needed.
  • Support industrialisation, site works and commissioning; issue drawings and documentation; validate and report test results.
  • Innovate with new technical ideas for potential patent applications; integrate with other engineering departments for product development and project teams.
  • Industrialise validated designs by engaging with stakeholders; broaden and share HVDC knowledge with engineers at all levels.
  • Adhere to standards and legislation; promote and follow EHS policies within the team; occasional global travel for validations and supply chain integration.

The Person

  • Graduate-level mechanical engineering expertise or equivalent experience with solid technical understanding of general mechanical engineering.
  • Degree-level education in mechanical engineering or related discipline; relevant career experience acceptable.
  • Ability to think innovatively, apply engineering knowledge, and communicate effectively; strong desire to learn new skills and share knowledge.

Skills and Experience

  • Solid understanding of mechanical engineering principles such as stress analysis and calculations.
  • Familiarity with FEA tools (e.g., Creo Simulate or Ansys) and 3D CAD tools (preferably Creo 4.0+; Windchill PDMlink).
  • Awareness of external standards (BSI, ISO, IEC, EN) and industrialisation constraints.
  • Experience with detail manufacturing drawings and drawing templates; requirements capture; technical notes; awareness of EHS compliance in design and engineering.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.

  • Ambition to progress toward professional registration.
  • Experience in electrical transmission equipment or power electronics design; design for manufacture; site installation, commissioning, or maintenance.
  • Evidence of knowledge sharing and collaboration.
