Overview
Mechanical Design Engineer β Mechanical Engineering role at GE Vernova. Based in Stafford, part of the HVDC Centre of Excellence, reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Team Leader within the HVDC Valve Converter Engineering function. This is a dynamic role in power electronics, contributing to HVDC converters and the forthcoming HVDC Grid.

Responsibilities
- Mechanical development and analysis of power electronic converter valves for HVDC & FACTs.
- Perform mechanical engineering calculations and simulations, with a focus on stress analysis of solids.
- Translate design intent into key components such as structural steel, composites, cooling systems, corona shields and insulators; capture and communicate design requirements to stakeholders.
- Contribute to quality of own work and the work of the team; execute standard operational/technical tasks with some flexibility in sequencing based on workload.
- Support industrialisation, site works and commissioning; issue drawings and documentation; validate and report tests.
- Innovate with new technical ideas for patent applications; integrate with other engineering departments for product development and project teams.
- Industrialise validated designs by engaging with stakeholders; broaden HVDC knowledge and share expertise with engineers at all levels.
- Adhere to standards and legislation; promote and follow EHS policies within the team; occasional global travel for product validations and supply chain integration/site support.
The Person
- Graduate-level mechanical engineering expertise or equivalent experience with solid technical understanding of mechanical engineering.
- Degree-level education in mechanical engineering or related science; applicants may have some career experience.
- Ability to think innovatively, apply engineering knowledge, and learn new skills; a proactive mindset and willingness to share knowledge.
Skills and Experience
- Understanding of mechanical engineering principles such as stress analysis and calculations.
- Familiarity with FEA tools (e.g., Creo Simulate or Ansys).
- Proficient with 3D CAD tools (preferably Creo 4.0+; Windchill PDM/PLM).
- Awareness of mechanical design to external standards (BSI, ISO, IEC, EN) and industrialisation constraints.
- Experience with detailed manufacturing drawings and drawing templates; requirements capture and technical note/report writing.
- Awareness of EHS compliance in design and engineering; strong problem-solving skills.
Advantageous
- Ambition to work towards professional registration.
- Experience in design of electrical transmission equipment or power electronics; design for manufacture; site experience in installation/commissioning/maintenance.
- Evidence of sharing knowledge and experience.
