The Manufacturing Quality Engineer is responsible for end-to-end product and process quality within the HVDC transformer manufacturing value stream, from core and winding through to final assembly and FAT. The role ensures compliance with customer specifications, internal standards, and ISO 9001, and drives continuous improvement to achieve a zero-defect framework, safe and on-time delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute and oversee daily in-process and final quality assurance activities across core, winding, insulation, tanking, assembly, drying, oil filling and testing areas.
  • Deploy and maintain quality control plans, inspection and test plans (ITPs) and 5S/cleanliness standards, ensuring robust controls at all critical-to-quality stages.
  • Lead investigation of nonconformities (NCRs), perform structured root cause analysis (5 Why, 8D) and drive effective corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Track and report quality KPIs (FPY, defect density, rework/scrap, customer complaints), identify trends and propose data-driven improvement actions.
  • Support and, when required, lead internal, customer and third-party audits.
  • Maintain records, traceability and QMS documentation in line with ISO 9001.
  • Collaborate with Production, Engineering, Test, Supply Chain, Supplier Quality and Project Management to resolve issues, improve manufacturability and secure smooth product flow.
  • Provide quality support for Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and customer inspections, including documentation review, deviations and technical clarifications.
  • Drive and participate in Lean / Six Sigma projects to improve process capability, reduce variation and eliminate waste.
  • Deliver quality training and shop-floor coaching on standards, procedures, defect prevention and inspection techniques.
  • Contribute to new product introduction and engineering change processes by reviewing drawings, specifications and control plans for quality risks.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial Engineering or equivalent; a master’s degree or relevant postgraduate certification is an advantage.
  • Good level of experience in manufacturing quality or related engineering roles within heavy electrical equipment, preferably power/HVDC transformer manufacturing.
  • Strong knowledge of Quality Management Systems with experience in maintaining ISO 9001 certification; familiarity with transformer standards preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency in FMEA, control plans, MSA, SPC, 8D problem solving and structured root cause analysis.
  • Proven record of leading cross-functional problem-solving teams and delivering measurable improvements in FPY, scrap, rework and customer PPM.
  • Hands-on exposure to transformer manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to interpret electrical and mechanical drawings and technical specifications.
  • Strong data analysis and reporting skills (Excel, PowerPoint; experience with ERP/QMS systems such as SAP, PLM is desirable).
  • Excellent communication skills, able to interface confidently with shop-floor teams, engineering, management, suppliers and customers.
  • Lean / Six Sigma Belt, equivalent continuous improvement experience.

Desired Attributes

  • Strong ownership mindset, able to work independently on the shop floor and prioritise across multiple production lines.
  • High attention to detail, disciplined documentation and a proactive approach to risk identification and mitigation.
  • Ability to coach, influence and build a quality culture in multi-functional and multicultural teams.

Applications from job seekers who require sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. However, non-EU/EEA candidates may not be appointed to a post if a suitably qualified, experienced and skilled EU/EEA candidate is available to take up the post, as the employing body is unlikely, in these circumstances, to satisfy the Resident Labour Market Test.
