This 1-year internship will be based at the GE Vernova Grid Solutions Asset Monitoring site in Lisburn, Northern Ireland and is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic university student or recent graduate who is interested in the application of their embedded systems and/or test engineering knowledge in industry. The Asset Monitoring product line is a class leading vendor of sensing devices and systems to electrical utilities and industrial customers.
Role responsibilities:
- Learn and understand the architecture and operation of GE Vernova transformer and asset monitoring systems with support from technical mentors.
- Support engineers in developing and improving M&D monitoring products at both system and hardware levels.
- Support system design activities, including block diagrams, interface definitions, technical documentation, and requirement traceability.
- Collaborate with firmware, hardware, and test engineers to support development of new product features and sub-system enhancements.
- Work hands-on with electronics, mechanical assemblies, and basic firmware/software integration to support concept builds and feature evaluation.
- Contribute to hands-on hardware prototyping activities involving electronics, mechanical assemblies, sensors, and PCBAs.
- Participate in system and hardware testing and validation, capturing results, defects, and observations in structured formats.
- Prepare and share test findings and experimental data with the team to support design decisions and risk reduction.
- Apply GE Vernova ways of working and maintain a strong safety-first mindset during all laboratory and engineering activities.
- Carry out additional duties as requested by the line manager.
Essential criteria:
- Currently studying toward, or recently completed, a degree in Systems Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical discipline.
- Basic understanding of electronic components and hardware and firmware design.
- Familiarity with schematics (system/electronics).
- Basic usage of lab and test equipment (for example multimeter, oscilloscopes, soldering tools, DAQ systems, and environmental rigs).
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
- Methodical problem-solving approach and good organisational skills.
Desirable Criteria:
- Exposure to software development and test processes and tracking tools.
- Basic understanding of embedded/system development tools (for example compilers, debuggers, and version control).
- Programming experience in at least one language (for example C, C++, or Python).
- Basic understanding of embedded operating systems such as Linux/RTOS/etc.
- Usage of ECAD software such as KiCAD, Eagle, Altium.
