GE applies the science and systems of power conversion to help drive the electric transformation of the world's energy infrastructure. We are looking for a lead mechanical engineer to work in the equipment design team within our systems engineering organisation, based in our Rugby or Glasgow engineering centres. You will be responsible for developing our next generation of Naval products, designing cutting edge technology for future Naval platforms. You will be involved at all stages of the product development process from concept to manufacturing, collaborating with Project Managers, Technical Leads, and the power systems and power electronics teams to deliver on customer requirements.

Due to the security restrictions on this role, applications will only be accepted from UK Nationals who either hold, or are eligible for SC security clearance.

At GE Vernova, we apply the science and systems of power conversion to accelerate the electric transformation of the world's energy infrastructure. At our Glasgow engineering centre, you'll be part of a team developing cutting-edge technology for future Naval platforms β€” taking products from early concept through to manufacturing across some of the most technically demanding defence and industrial applications in the sector.

As a Lead Mechanical Engineer, you'll own the mechanical design of power electronics, electrical distribution, and integrated test equipment, working closely with project managers, technical leads, and power systems and power electronics engineers to deliver against challenging customer requirements. If you're a mechanical design engineer who enjoys the full product development lifecycle and wants to work on technology that genuinely matters, this is that role.

What You'll Do

  • Develop mechanical designs for power electronics, electrical distribution, and integrated test equipment β€” balancing performance, reliability, cost, and manufacturability, and applying Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) techniques throughout.
  • Create 3D models and 2D drawings in PTC Creo, and create and manage parts and Bills of Materials (BoM) in Siemens Teamcenter Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software.
  • Perform engineering analyses using hand calculations and software tools, and develop test plans to support physical prototype testing and design validation.
  • Act as the technical point of contact for mechanical engineering topics across your project work, collaborating with product and project managers to deliver customer requirements on time and to budget.
  • Drive engineering quality and efficiency by applying engineering tools and processes to optimise throughput and embed DFMA principles across the design process.

Who We're Looking For

You're an experienced mechanical design engineer with a track record in product development for industrial or electrical equipment β€” someone who takes ownership of technical decisions and brings rigour to every stage of the design process.

Required

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Proven experience in mechanical design engineering, with solid technical knowledge of manufacturing processes, sheet metal design, DFMA, and material selection.
  • A track record in product development, ideally gained in the industrial or electrical equipment sectors.
  • The ability to read electrical schematics and use them to inform and develop suitable mechanical designs.
  • Proficiency in PTC Creo or similar 3D CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software for 3D part and assembly modelling and 2D drawing production.
  • UK Nationality and eligibility to obtain UK SC (Security Check) clearance β€” this is a non-negotiable requirement for this role.

Preferred

  • Experience in the design of Medium Voltage (MV) and Low Voltage (LV) switchgear and packaging of power electronics equipment.
  • Experience using Siemens Teamcenter PLM software for BoM creation and management.
  • Expertise in stress, thermal, and fluid flow analyses using hand calculations and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools such as ANSYS and Fluent.
