This is an exciting opportunity for a R&D System Engineer, working on product development in the GE Vernova Monitoring & Diagnostics (M&D) business, within Grid Automation (GA). The M&D product line is a class leading vendor of sensing devices and systems to Electrical Utilities and Industrial customers.
This Systems Engineer role will focus on supporting the development of Monitoring and Diagnostics (M&D) products within the GE Vernova technology team. The successful applicant will contribute to system design, documentation, validation, and improvement activities, working closely with lead engineers and cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality products and features. This role is technical and hands-on, requiring a strong ability to think independently, curiosity about the product, willingness to engage with hardware and software, and a focus on quality and safety.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and apply system expertise to refine and develop M&D monitoring products, demonstrating clear understanding of operational principles, design and usage.
- Work collaboratively within a diverse cross-functional team to define, design and develop new system concepts and features for M&D monitoring products.
- Work hands-on with electronics, mechanical parts, and basic software integration (e.g., scripting, test firmware) to build and iterate on early design concepts.
- Produce early-stage system design documentation, such as block diagrams, interface definitions, and communication protocol summaries.
- Maintain a well-documented approach to builds, ensuring traceability and clarity of setup and outcomes.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to understand customer needs, system requirements and constraints.
- Participate in hands-on system testing and validation within a dynamic team, recording results and observations in structured formats.
- Present prototype findings and experimental data clearly to wider team to inform design direction and risk reduction.
- Apply GE Vernova way principles in day-to-day work with a safety-first mindset.
- Carry out additional duties as requested by the line manager.
Essential Criteria:
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in relevant engineering, scientific or technical field.
- Demonstrable experience in industrial product and architectural system design from development from concept to deployment.
- Hands-on prototyping or experimental builds involving sensors, embedded systems, or electromechanical devices.
- Familiarity with lab tools (oscilloscopes, soldering, DAQs, environmental test rigs, etc.) and safe lab practices.
- Ability to troubleshoot hardware setups and iterate designs quickly using first principles thinking.
- Advanced documentation and communication skills to support knowledge transfer and design traceability.
- Curiosity and initiative: willing to ask questions, try new approaches, and explore design alternatives.
- Collaborating with large, cross-functional and diverse teams, including remote environments to align on key design decisions.
- Communicating technical matters clearly and concisely, both in writing and verbally.
- Safety-conscious mindset, especially when working with lab hardware, electronics, and test environments.
Desirable Criteria:
- Masters degree (or equivalent experience) in relevant engineering, scientific or technical field.
- Experience with rapid prototyping tools (3D printing, breadboarding, test harnesses).
- Experience with PCBA layout design and test.
- Experience with embedded software or scripting (e.g., Python, C) for test automation or data collection.
- Exposure to Agile development environments.
- Familiarity with utility monitoring, diagnostics products, or industrial sensor systems.
- Experience in product development from concept to deployment.
- Familiarity with lean engineering practices and continuous improvement initiatives.
