Job Description
Dowty Propellers, part of the GE Aerospace organization is a world-leading manufacturer of integrated propeller systems. Its products are used in applications that range from regional and military aircraft to marine hovercrafts.
Dowty Propellers is now seeking a Performance Engineer to support our team of analysis engineers during a period of maternity leave on an 18 month FTC. As part of the team the role will require the use of existing in-house and commercial aerodynamic and acoustic prediction methods to design new propellers, improving existing design processes, developing new tools and analysing experimental data to validate the tools. The successful candidate will play a role in the design, analysis and optimization of propeller components and sub-systems, ensuring they meet the highest standards of performance, reliability and safety.
Role and Responsibilities

  • Ability to carry out performance analysis of propeller systems with a variety of proprietary and commercial tools
  • Developing fully optimised propeller solutions whilst ensuring integrity of the product as the highest priority
  • Use existing aerodynamic and acoustic prediction methods to design new propellers to meet specified customer requirements
  • Support aero-acoustics tools development and technical instructions
  • Create technical documentation of predictions tools developed, new design processes and analysed test data
  • Effectively communicate project status, issues and developments
  • Work within defined parameters to make decisions to solve engineering problems, applying solid engineering principles and judgment to find feasible solutions
  • Lead the execution of assigned project tasks independently

Essential Requirements

  • Degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering or equivalent
  • Strong computing, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience within the aerospace industry and able to demonstrate hands on experience in design and optimisation of propeller/turbomachinery blades
  • Demonstrated experience in programming languages such as Python/Matlab/Octave/Fortran for developing optimisation methods, data analysis and processing
  • Fundamental knowledge of rotor aerodynamics and acoustics
  • Excellent communication skills, with strong written, report writing and presentation skills, can communicate across all levels including senior leadership team and customers
  • Able to operate effectively under strict project deadlines and constraints
  • Target oriented, responsible, passion to learn, open mind with strong motivation
  • Ability to work independently when required showing initiative and logical decision making
  • Competent with Microsoft Office tools
  • Commitment to high standards of aero-performance excellence
  • Prepared to work offsite for short periods of time and willingness to work extended/flexible hours when required to meet customer demands

Desired Characteristics

  • Experience in use of open source or commercial computational fluid dynamics tools for rotor aerodynamics and acoustics
  • Knowledge of propeller systems (aerodynamics, acoustics, structural, composites, controls etc.)
  • Knowledge of propeller certification and airworthiness requirements
