Dowty Propellers, which is a part of the GE Aerospace organization, is a world-leading manufacturer of integrated propeller systems. Its products are used in applications that range from regional and military aircraft to marine hovercrafts. Dowty Propellers is looking for an experienced Stress Analysis Engineer to join its team of analysis engineers. Reporting to the Engineering Analysis Manager, the Lead Stress Engineer will have experience in mechanical stress analysis using hand calculations and FE modelling. Knowledge of composite analysis, rotating assemblies or previous propeller experience would be a distinct advantage. The role will be focused on sustaining activities, supporting OE production, repairs and customer operations.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Perform stress analysis (hand calculations and Finite Element Analysis) with a variety of proprietary and commercial tools, contributing to the design of a wide variety of components.
  • Work towards stress approval status for OE production and repair concessions.
  • Support root cause analysis to identify issues that may arise in the manufacturing process that contribute to non-conformances.
  • Contribute to the design process of propeller systems (composite and metallic structures), test rigs and tooling.
  • Support analysis tools development, technical instructions and the generation of stress methods.
  • Create documentation of technical data in accordance with engineering policies and procedures.
  • Lead the execution of the assigned project tasks.

Essential Requirements

  • Degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience required as a Stress Engineer within the aerospace industry and able to demonstrate knowledge and hands-on capability of both classical hand calculation procedures and finite element methods.
  • Demonstrated experience of commercial analysis packages (Ansys Classic/Workbench, Creo, Hypermesh, LS-DYNA etc.).
  • A Stress Signatory within an Aerospace Organisation responsible for the approval of technical reports, drawings, and concessions.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and of the methods used for repairs to metallic and composite components.
  • Excellent communication skills, with strong written, report writing and presentation skills, can communicate across all levels from shop floor to customers and up to Board level.
  • A logical problem solver who can operate effectively under project constraints.
  • Target oriented, responsible, passion to learn, open mind with strong motivation.

  • Experience in structural dynamics and modal analysis.
  • Experience in bird impact analysis.
  • Tools development and coding using Matlab, Python, Fortran etc.
  • Knowledge of propeller theory.
  • Knowledge of propeller certification and airworthiness requirements.
  • Catia V5 knowledge and experience.
