Female Personal Assistant VM/LD/1.26 (CGIL - North Lanarkshire)

Abigail is an older lady who lives in the Wishaw area. She is looking for a caring and reliable Female Personal Assistant who will take time to get to know her, understand what matters to her and support her to live independently and comfortably in her own home.

Abigail enjoys watching television and listening to music, especially Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. Companionship is an important part of the role, whether that means enjoying music together, sharing conversation or supporting Abigail to take part in activities she enjoys.

Abigail values a calm, positive and supportive home environment where she can follow her preferred daily routine, feel safe and remain involved in decisions about her life.

About the role

You will provide respectful, one-to-one support tailored to Abigail’s needs, preferences and choices. A typical day may include:

  • Supporting Abigail with her morning routine and personal care, including in-bed care and catheter care.
  • Supporting her with medication in line with her agreed support plan.
  • Preparing meals, drinks and healthy snacks based on her preferences.
  • Supporting safe moving and assisting using equipment, including a tracking hoist and manual wheelchair.
  • Helping Abigail prepare for and take part in medical appointments at home.
  • Completing agreed household tasks, including keeping floors and the bathroom clean, so her home remains safe and comfortable.
  • Offering companionship, encouragement and meaningful conversation while supporting Abigail to do as much as she can for herself.

Every day may look different. You will need to be attentive and flexible, follow Abigail’s lead and balance practical support with her right to choice, dignity, privacy and independence.

About you

Abigail is looking for someone who is warm, friendly, dependable and proactive, with a good sense of humour and a genuine commitment to person-centred support. You should communicate clearly, listen carefully and build trust at Abigail’s pace.

As Abigail lives with dementia, you must be confident in responding calmly and safely when she becomes verbally distressed, while maintaining clear and consistent professional boundaries. You will use a patient and empathetic approach to understand possible triggers, reduce distress and help de‑escalate difficult moments, while protecting Abigail’s dignity and following her support plan and agreed safety procedures.

You should also:

  • Be respectful of Abigail’s choices, routines, home and privacy.
  • Be observant and able to recognise and communicate changes in her wellbeing.
  • Work consistently and collaboratively with Abigail and the people involved in her support.
  • Be comfortable working in a home with three cats.

Experience of moving and assisting is desirable but not essential, as training will be provided. Relevant experience in dementia support and responding to distress would be beneficial but not essential.

Hours, rota and pay

This is a permanent, home-based position in Wishaw, offering a guaranteed minimum of 33 hours per week on a two-week rolling rota:

  • Week 1: Monday, Saturday and Sunday — 33 hours.
  • Week 2: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday — 33 hours.

Typical weekday shifts are 9.00 am–8.00 pm, with some flexibility, and weekend shifts are 9.00 am–8.00 pm. Exact hours will be discussed at interview.

Hourly rate: £13.45 per hour.
