GC Doors is looking for a motivated and reliable Trainee Window & Door Engineer to join our growing team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys practical, hands-on work and wants to build a long-term career within a specialist engineering trade. No previous window and door experience is required. We are looking for individuals with the right attitude, work ethic, reliability, and willingness to learn.
Working alongside experienced engineers, you will gain practical experience across residential, commercial and public-sector client sites throughout Greater London. This role offers genuine long-term career prospects and the opportunity to develop specialist technical skills within a growing business.
The Role
As a Trainee Window & Door Engineer, you will support Senior Engineers with the inspection, diagnosis, repair and maintenance of window and door systems. You will gain experience in:
- Window and door repairs and maintenance
- Fault diagnosis and problem-solving
- Surveying and reporting
- uPVC, aluminium, timber and composite systems
- Window and door hardware
- Customer service and client interaction
Your responsibilities will include:
- Supporting engineers with fault diagnosis and repairs
- Recording completed works using photographs and job notes
- Assisting with loading, unloading and transporting materials
- Helping to keep company vehicles, tools, equipment and materials organised and ready for use
- Maintaining a professional attitude and appearance on site
Learning and Development
This role is suited to individuals who are genuinely motivated to learn and develop their skills. Whilst you will receive support, guidance and hands-on experience from experienced engineers, this is not a classroom-based training programme. You will be learning through practical experience on live jobs and by working closely with Senior Engineers. Your development will largely depend on your own initiative, willingness to learn and engagement whilst on site. We are looking for people who actively ask questions, take an interest in how systems work and are prepared to invest time and effort into developing their knowledge. Successful trainees are those who take ownership of their own development whilst making the most of the support available to them.
Career Progression
This is a genuine trainee position with a clear progression pathway: Trainee Engineer → Junior Engineer → Service Engineer. Most trainees who demonstrate the right attitude, reliability, technical ability and commitment can expect to progress to Junior Engineer level within approximately 18-24 months. Progression is based on competence, performance and capability rather than time served. Individuals who apply themselves and consistently demonstrate the required standards may progress sooner.
This is a trainee position and all successful applicants will join the business within the trainee salary band. Previous trade experience may be beneficial but does not automatically result in a higher starting salary.
Working Arrangements
You will be assigned to a Senior Engineer and work alongside them throughout your trainee period. As a trainee, you will not be issued with your own company van. You will typically meet your engineer at our Cheshunt depot, a nearby railway station, or another agreed location before travelling together to client sites in a company vehicle. Client sites may be located anywhere across Greater London and the surrounding areas. Applications are particularly welcomed from candidates who live within a reasonable travelling distance of Cheshunt and the surrounding areas.
Working Hours, Travel and Expenses
Your contracted working hours are Monday to Friday, 08:00-17:00. As this is a field-based role, travel forms a significant part of the working day. Applicants should be comfortable travelling throughout Greater London and understand that journey times can vary depending on client locations and traffic conditions. Employees are responsible for their own travel costs to and from the agreed daily meeting location, including travel to the first meeting point and home from the final drop-off location. Travel between client sites during the working day will be undertaken in a company vehicle and will not be at the employee's expense.
Essential Requirements
- Reliability, punctuality, and a willingness to learn
- Good communication skills and a positive attitude
- Ability to follow instructions and work safely
- Confidence using a smartphone or tablet
- Ability to undertake practical manual work
- Full UK driving licence (or actively working towards obtaining one) and the right to work in the United Kingdom
What We Offer
- Permanent PAYE employment with a competitive starting salary
- Clear career progression and long-term development opportunities
- Ongoing support and guidance from experienced engineers
- Company uniform, PPE, phone and tablet
- Paid overtime opportunities
- 28 days annual leave including bank holidays and a Monday-Friday working pattern
Recruitment Process

Stage 2: Telephone Discussion - Suitable applicants will be invited to an informal telephone discussion to discuss their experience, career goals and the role in more detail.
Stage 3: Paid Site Trial - Candidates who successfully complete the telephone discussion may be invited to attend a paid site trial. The site trial is paid at £80 per day and provides an opportunity to experience the role first-hand whilst allowing us to assess your suitability for the position. Please note that attendance at a paid site trial does not guarantee an offer of employment.
