Job Description:

Global Banking School is seeking a Study Skills Lecturer to support our students in developing effective learning strategies. The successful candidate will deliver workshops and one-on-one sessions focusing on academic skills, including writing, research, time management, and exam preparation. A passion for student support and success is essential.

ROLE PURPOSE:

To be a member of the study skills team, working in close collaboration with subject lecturers to develop and teach study skills within the curriculum across a range of HE programmes from Foundation to Masters’ Level. This includes for example, improving English language and numeracy, organisational and presentation skills, digital literacy and basic IT skills, reading, writing and higher order research skills.

We also require you to be flexible to work evenings and weekends as required.

This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Main Responsibilities

  • Working collaboratively to teach academic literacies and digital skills and providing assignment support, as directed by the Dean and Associate Dean (Academic Support).
  • Designing/documenting bespoke courses, digital resources, workshop plans and individual schemes of work as required to develop study skills in the curricula, ensuring current, relevant and effective skills are consistently delivered across GBS.
  • Delivering/evaluating teaching and identifying areas for potential improvement, recommending these to the Dean and Associate Dean (Academic Support) to enhance the quality of teaching, learning and overall student experience in accordance with the GBS’s Learning and Teaching strategy
  • Maintaining accurate records ensuring compliance and maintenance of relevant systems, including monitoring student attendance.
  • Participating in, and occasionally leading, CPD to maintain currency in specialist areas and in inclusive teaching practices.
  • Providing feedback on individual and class progress in their understanding of academic writing and other relevant study skills.
  • Providing tutorial consultations with students, constructive comments that are reactive to the individual student need, explaining where work fails to meet assessment criteria and suggesting ways to improve their work / working practices.
  • Recording details from these appointments for statistical, evaluation and quality purposes, and to refer students to other services as appropriate.
  • Effectively engaging with VLE and research resources and facilitate students’ learning by means of engagement with online resources and activities.

Student Experience

  • Contributing to the enhancement of the student experience
  • Promoting high levels of student performance in accordance with GBS strategic aims and objectives regarding the student experience.
  • Representing GBS to enhance the support to students and ensuring GBS achieves its strategic objectives.
  • Engaging with the wider GBS to support and represent the activities of the Learning and Teaching Department.

Planning & Organisation

  • Carrying out the administration and organisation of course contributions, materials production, bespoke courses, group workshops and individual or group tutorials.
  • Contributing to GBS quality assurance systems and processes.
  • Working with academic teams / working groups to support the achievement of academic and project objectives
  • Engaging/complying with staff management processes, e.g. GBS Performance processes
  • Maintaining information and documentation on the delivery of duties as required.
  • Identifying and implementing improvements to the framework for Academic Support, taking account of student and staff feedback, changes to policy, strategy or the external environment

Requirements

  • Master\’s degree and/or a PhD in the relevant area
  • Successful track record of teaching adult learners from diverse backgrounds on HE programmes
  • Proven experience of providing individual and group study skills support in response to identified learning needs
  • Willingness to lead a specific area of literacy development, such as reading, writing, critical thinking, numeracy, digital skills, research skills (quantitative or qualitative), project and dissertation support, peer-assisted learning;
  • High level of digital literacy and advanced communication skills
  • Course design and curriculum development experience
  • DELTA qualification or Advance HE Fellowship
