This R&D Mechanical Engineering position is based at our Craven Arms, UK site in the Liquid Phase Division of the Life Sciences and Diagnostic Group.
As a Mechanical Engineer you will be part of a team that researches, develops designs, prototypes and tests new products for Agilent's Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) product line while also supporting current products manufactured at our Malaysian site in Penang.
You will work with cross‑functional teams including mechanical, electrical, firmware, quality and software engineers, scientists, marketing, manufacturing, purchasing and service organizations to transform your designs into marketable products.
Responsibilities
- Involve in mechanical design and development activities of Agilent products, including proposals, technical and risk assessment, concept studies, detailed designs, analysis, drawings, prototypes and tests.
- Responsible for component sizing, calculation and selection of design elements such as enclosures, structures, mechanisms, automation, thermal management, optics, EMI shielding and fluidic systems.
- Propose mechanical architecture/outline, components placement, CAD database management and platform standardisation.
- Key estimator of mechanical BOM cost.
- Conduct mechanical engineering tests, characterisations, cyclic and reliability tests according to product requirements.
- Coordinate and generate mechanical design related test cases.
- Ensure mechanical design meets product requirements and project scopes, and delivers all product lifecycle deliverables as per committed milestones.
- Perform root cause analysis on issues found during development and sustaining phase.
- Comply with documentation requirements and database management mandated by the QMS of the legal entity.
- Deliver designs in compliance with corporate design standards.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- 4+ years of relevant mechanical design experience.
- Must be able to work in an interdisciplinary, cross‑functional environment.
- Proficiency in 3‑D solid modelling and drafting using CAD software (Siemens NX preferred, or Solid Works, Inventor, Creo).
- Experience with material processing techniques such as precision machining, sheet metal, casting/molding, 3‑D printing.
- Strong technical, analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- Demonstrated leadership, influencing, communication and planning skills.
- Self‑motivated team player who can multi‑task and establish rapport with internal customers, sponsors, cross‑functional team members and suppliers.
- Self‑mandated work independently with minimal supervision.

- Experience in optical design.
- Design of components for heat transfer and thermal‑fluid systems.
- Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Experience with tolerance stack‑ups.
- Proficiency in simulation tools: Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) using ANSYS, Simcenter and other numerical simulation techniques.
