GB Taekwondo are establishing a number of satellite centres to create a sustainable connection between our National Performance Programmes (the World Class Programme) and local communities. These centres will have four main aims:

• Raising the standards of talent in Olympic and Paralympic Taekwondo
• Breaking down barriers to the Olympic and Paralympic pathway for those struggling to access existing opportunities
• Connecting and adding value to existing sport pathways
• Building a community that are passionate about realising the potential of young people

GB Taekwondo intends to establish 3-5 sites over the next 8 years and are starting in London. The GBT Coach will be instrumental in bringing this new initiative to life. The successful candidate will operate from a dedicated Taekwondo centre and will play a key role in shaping the development of the centre, the programme of coaching, invitational sessions, initiatives and events.

We’re looking for a motivated and dedicated coach who is passionate about realising the potential of young people, knowledgeable about athlete development and able to build a community to support their work. The successful candidate will be a self-starter, able to operate independently, open minded, entrepreneurial, able to listen and build trust. The coach will draw on the support of the GB Taekwondo leadership team and High-Performance Coaches, to build a close connection between the centre and the National Performance Programmes. The GBT Coach will be responsible for establishing and coaching at a new satellite site in London, to develop the next generation of Olympic and Paralympic Taekwondo talent, break down barriers to progression for young athletes unable to access the sport and build a connection between the National Performance Programmes and existing sport pathways.

Key Responsibilities

• Inspire and support athletes with Paralympic and Olympic potential
• Set clear objectives for athlete progression
• Deliver training and sparring that stretches performance
• Collaborate with the Manchester based coaching team to align coaching
• Debrief performances and training to identify areas for improvement
• Deliver ~30 hours/week of coaching, from taster sessions to advanced training
• Recruit athletes through school, outreach and community engagement
• Support athletes in competition
• Organise test match development opportunities and fight-night events
• Ensure the centre operates in line with GBT values and standards
• Lead and coordinate a small team of sessional coaches
• Work with the Head of Athlete Development to develop, implement and evolve a training syllabus aligned with technical, tactical, physical, and emotional development goals of GBT Performance Programmes
• Collaborate with local clubs to engage athletes and instructors
• Create a welcoming, inclusive, and safe environment for all users
• Set standards and create a positive, and respectful training culture
• Respond to opportunities to grow and sustain the centre
• Role location: Based at GBT’s Hub location in London
• Involves evening work and includes regular weekends
• Will require travel to competition
• Will require regular travel to Manchester to connect with the National Team
• May require the coach to undertake an initial induction period in Manchester

Minimum requirements

• Coached athletes to international competitive level, and/or competed as a senior international athlete
• Eligibility to coach (i.e., holds a coaching qualification or equivalent)
• 1st Dan (Kyorugi Taekwondo)

Relevant experience

• Proven track record in the sport as a coach and/or athlete at a significant international level
• Established and/or developed a club environment
• Instructed/coached across a range of age groups and abilities
• Managed sessional coach or has developed others as part of a team
• Experience of communication with athletes, parents and carers, customers and partners
• Experience of growing a healthy and inclusive sport culture

Education background

• Evidence of study in coaching, sport science, or relatable subjects. While a specific type or level of qualification is not essential, candidates will be expected to show an advanced level of subject knowledge. Candidates should have a good command of the language, the ability to document and communicate effectively as well as good administration skills.
