Overview
Due to our continued growth at GB Railfreight we are now recruiting expereinced Rail Vehicle Fitters to ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of rail vehicles through the inspection, maintenance, and repair of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and Pneumatic systems and ancillary components. The Rail Vehicle Fitter will perform routine and diagnostic maintenance activities, contribute to the minimisation of downtime, and uphold safety and quality standards in line with company policies and regulatory requirements.
The salary on offer for this role is £40,000 – £52,000 dependent on experience. A company vehicle will be provided.

Responsibilities
- Conduct scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, repairs, and inspections on rail vehicles, focusing on core systems including but not limited to propulsion, braking, suspension and structural components and all elements of ancillary modules across the various fleets.
- Diagnose faults using technical manuals, diagnostic equipment, and inspections, implementing appropriate corrective actions.
- Disassemble, repair, and reassemble mechanical parts and assemblies to the required standards.
- Maintain accurate records of work carried out, including parts used and work completed, in compliance with company and regulatory documentation standards.
- Follow health and safety procedures to ensure safe working practices within the depot or on-site environment.
- Assist in the implementation of maintenance plans and procedures to improve operational reliability.
- Collaborate with other team members, including managers and other fitters, to maximise efficiency and resolve complex issues.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by reporting recurring defects and suggesting maintenance enhancements.
- Comply with all relevant safety, environmental, and quality standards, including Railway Group Standards and industry best practices.
- Collaborate with other departments within GBRf
Qualifications
Personal Profile
- Relevant engineering qualification (e.g., NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical/Electric Engineering, City & Guilds, or equivalent).
- Proven experience working on rail vehicles or other rolling stock/machinery.
- Knowledge of mechanical systems used in rail vehicles, including hydraulic and pneumatic components.
- Familiarity with maintenance management systems and diagnostic tools.
- Proficiency in mechanical fitting, alignment, and assembly techniques.
- Ability to work from technical drawings and specifications.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality workmanship.
- Problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure.
- Good communication and teamwork abilities.
- Willingness to work shifts, weekends, or on-call if required.
