Role Description

This is a full-time, on-site Switchgear Technician role based in Sussex.

The Switchgear Technician will assemble, install, test, and commission LV switchgear and generator control systems according to technical drawings and specifications.

Daily responsibilities include performing routine inspections, diagnosing electrical faults, carrying out maintenance and repairs, and supporting preventive maintenance programs to ensure safe, reliable operation.

The role also involves collaborating with engineers and project managers, updating service records and documentation, and providing clear, professional support to customers and site personnel.

The technician will follow all relevant health, safety, and quality standards while working in workshop and customer site environments.

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of power generation systems and LV switchgear, with the ability to work safely on electrical installations.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting electrical and control system issues, including fault finding and diagnostic testing.
  • Experience with maintenance & repair of switchgear and generator control equipment, including component replacement and functional testing.
  • Ability to perform preventive maintenance tasks, such as scheduled inspections, cleaning, adjustments, and recording equipment condition.
  • Effective customer service skills, with the capacity to communicate clearly with clients, colleagues, and site personnel.
  • Relevant technical qualification or apprenticeship in electrical engineering or a related discipline (e. g., NVQ, City & Guilds, or equivalent).
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
  • Familiarity with applicable electrical safety standards and best practices, and commitment to safe working procedures.
  • Good problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and capability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Prior experience in switchgear manufacturing, testing, or commissioning is an advantage.
