This role is seeking a Counsel or Senior Counsel, Export Controls (UK) to serve as the legal subject matter expert for export control and trade compliance matters across the company’s manufacturing operations in the UK. The successful candidate will provide strategic guidance on UK export controls, EU dual-use regulations, and trade sanctions, ensuring compliance while enabling the company’s global operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as primary legal counsel on export control and trade compliance matters, including product classification, licensing, and jurisdictional determinations.
- Set team priorities, oversee deliverables, and ensure compliance, operational, and business objectives are met.
- Provide guidance on UK and EU dual-use regulations, ITAR / EAR implications, and trade sanctions programs.
- Draft, review, and negotiate export-related agreements, including Technical Assistance Agreements (TAAs), Manufacturing License Agreements (MLAs), and nondisclosure agreements involving controlled technologies.
- Collaborate with Legal, Finance, Supply Chain, Engineering, and Operations teams to strengthen compliance processes and technology control plans.
- Represent the company in interactions with UK and EU regulatory authorities and other relevant government agencies.
- Support internal audits, investigations, and voluntary disclosures related to export compliance.
- Develop and deliver training to internal teams on export control obligations and best practices.
- Monitor emerging UK and EU export control regulations and provide timely guidance on changes.
- Model the company’s values—Integrity, Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, and Enthusiasm—in all legal and compliance activities.
Qualifications
- Education: Qualified solicitor or barrister in the UK; or JD with eligibility to practice UK law.
- Experience: Minimum 3-5+ years advising on export control, trade compliance, or international trade law. Deep knowledge of UK export controls, EU dual-use regulations, sanctions programs, and international trade compliance. Proven experience managing export licensing, classification, and compliance programs. Ability to provide practical, business-oriented legal guidance and partner cross-functionally with multiple teams. Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
