Gateway Housing has been supporting communities to thrive since 1926. We are an ambitious London-based housing association with over 3,000 homes in the heart of London’s East End. We provide social rented homes, shared ownership, and sheltered housing. We develop new homes too and are part way through an exciting programme to deliver another 250 homes by 2025. We also run our own in-house maintenance service, Gateway Homeworks.

We are looking for an experienced Multi-trade Operative to provide high-quality, multi-disciplinary trade skills in the maintenance, repair, and refurbishment of social housing properties. This role involves carrying out a variety of tasks including plumbing, carpentry, plastering, tiling, and general maintenance to ensure that properties meet safety and quality standards. The post holder will be expected to work efficiently and professionally in a customer-facing role, delivering excellent service to tenants whilst ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations, health and safety guidelines, and company policies.

Your duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Carry out a wide range of maintenance and repair work across multiple trades (e.g., plumbing, electrical, carpentry, plastering, tiling) in social housing properties to ensure that all work is completed to a high standard and within specified timeframes.
  • Provide a high level of customer service by engaging professionally with tenants, addressing their concerns, and ensuring minimal disruption during maintenance works.
  • Communicate effectively regarding the progress of work, timelines, and any necessary follow-up actions.
  • Ensure that all repairs meet the required standards and specifications, and that materials are used efficiently.
  • Complete all tasks to the highest quality, minimizing the need for rework and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
  • Plan and organise your work in an economical and effective manner, making the best use of your available time, transport and materials in accordance with specified company priority response times.
  • Work collaboratively with other team members, contractors, and management to ensure that work is completed on time, to a high standard, and in accordance with agreed-upon service levels.
  • Be aware of responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act and ensure safe working systems and procedures are adopted at all times including the wearing of appropriate personal protective equipment.

  • Proven experience in working across multiple trades (e.g., plumbing, electrical, carpentry, plastering, tiling) in a maintenance or repair capacity.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Good time management and organisational skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Knowledge of procedures for responding to emergency maintenance issues.
  • Sound knowledge of building systems, regulations, and standards.
  • Good awareness of health and safety at work including risk assessment, the need to follow safe working procedures and willing and able to wear and/or use appropriate personal protective equipment.
