To support the local implementation of the Maternity and Neonatal delivery plan in relation to Theme 2 - Supporting our workforce to develop their skills and capacity to provide high-quality care. The post holder will work closely with the Recruitment and Retention midwife to develop our student midwives from placement to registration and recruitment. They will provide a comprehensive programme of support and development to our student midwives to grow our future workforce. They will support the senior midwifery and nursing teams with directing the strategic professional and clinical development of midwifery/nursing practice and innovation to improve the patient experience and clinical outcomes, working according to the NMC and relevant professional bodies and Trust guidelines to provide, promote and develop high quality evidence-based, co-produced midwifery practice. They will work hand-in-hand with local Higher Education provider partners to maximize student training capacity and develop innovative and bespoke training opportunities. They will ensure all clinical staff are updated and equipped with the appropriate skills to support training needs within the department.

Main duties of the job:

  • In collaboration with education providers, assist in the management of the portfolio of student placements within the Maternity/SCBU.
  • To expand practice placement opportunities as necessary across a broad range of disciplines/professional areas in conjunction with the ICB/HEE and partner educational institutions.
  • Work in collaboration with PPFs in the wider Trust to maintain the entire portfolio of Practice Placements for NHS commissioned courses.
  • To facilitate and maintain a student Trust induction programme specific to the needs of student midwives' orientation into the practice areas.
  • To contribute to ensuring the quality of existing placements by identifying areas of good practice and establishing the professional development needs of mentors.
  • To provide support and guidance to mentors or equivalent and to students, particularly in relation to highlighting potential problems in placement areas.
  • To support and facilitate the development of clinical practice by providing clinical and nursing leadership.
  • Promote a culture that supports clinical audit and research across the professions of Nursing, Midwifery & Quality.
  • Develop and deliver educational programmes related to developing and improving practice across the organisation, to multi-professional staff groups.
  • To facilitate and support with personalised student progression plans.

Job responsibilities:

  • To work collaboratively with education providers in monitoring the quality of existing and new placements in the Trust and independent sector.
  • Work across organisational boundaries, including the NENC LMNS, Universities and other NHS Trusts, including the PPF Network, to develop placements that will enhance the student learning experience.
  • Work in partnership with education providers to ensure placement areas meet NMC, HCPC and other professional bodies standards for practice placements.
  • Attend monthly regional and local meetings to collaborate and share information and learning.
  • Through ADOM and the Director of Practice Placements liaise with HEE regarding the broader issues of practice placement management.
  • Liaise with placement officers for other groups of students as appropriate.
  • Provide specialist advice to a range of health care professionals which may have a conflict of interest such as capacity, educational standards, and NMC adaptation programs.
  • Lead the education, development and ongoing support of practice assessors and educators; delivering assessor updates to comply with NMC/HCPC and University requirements.
  • Organise and support Trust practice assessors and supervisors to attend moderation sessions and student interviews in the University setting.
  • Work in partnership with ward/dept managers to ensure Education Audits of placements are undertaken as required and develop action plans where standards are not met.
  • Communicate with senior management and ward/department teams on change processes which are sensitive in nature and can affect service developments.
  • Make presentations/contributions to large multi-professional groups, and at local and regional conferences.
  • Be able to respond to unpredictable situations in a manner that maintains working relationships.
