Applications are invited from registered Medical Practitioners for two Clinical Teaching Fellow (CTF) posts, within the department of Obstetrics and General Gynaecology in Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust. These are fixed term posts, for a period of 12 months, which will commence August 2026. Please note that this vacancy is only open to applicants with a minimum of 24 months NHS experience at time of start date.
These posts would suit individuals with an interest in medical education, an awareness of the undergraduate curriculum relating to Reproductive Health, and a desire to expand their teaching skills and experience.
Main duties of the jobThe successful candidates will be key members of the undergraduate education team within the Reproductive Health Department, working alongside the Midwife Teaching Fellow and the Consultant Lead for Undergraduate Education, and therefore an ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team is a key requirement. The posts will involve preparing and delivering teaching for the Newcastle University undergraduate clinical teaching programme for year 3 and year 5 Medical Students. The CTFs will join the wider group of teaching fellows within the Trust in supporting the assessment and examination of students at certain points in the year and will be expected to be available for these specified dates.
On average, there will be 5 teaching sessions and 5 clinical/professional development sessions per week. The main clinical duties are to support a busy obstetric department (approximately 2000 deliveries per year) and to support in O&G surgical lists and outpatient clinics. Specialist clinics and training can be arranged according to career interests.
Job responsibilitiesThese CTF roles will suit individuals with drive and initiative, and above all, enthusiasm for teaching and training. The successful applicants will work closely with a Midwifery Teaching Fellow, and so the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team is essential. Prior knowledge of the Newcastle University Undergraduate Medical Curriculum and its assessment requirements would be advantageous.
These posts focus heavily on the provision of undergraduate medical education within Reproductive Health, to facilitate the Stage 3 and Stage 5 students who rotate through the unit on an annual basis, over 2 semesters. The successful applicants would be expected to take account of important induction and assessment dates (all during term time) and aim to avoid leave during these times where possible. In addition, there are specific Integration days where multi-specialty teaching takes place, for larger groups of students, and the successful applicant would play a key role in these days, being part of the faculty, and expected to be available for these dates (all during term time).
Within this role, good administrative and organizational skills are of importance in formulating individualized timetables for students and ensuring an equal and fair exposure to clinical sessions for each student. Late notice changes are common within clinical sessions, and so the ability to troubleshoot and use initiative is vital to maximize the experience for the students.
Teaching opportunities will be many and varied, and an enthusiasm for education will be essential. A wide variety of clinical settings are used for teaching and training, and the post-holders would be expected to provide teaching to individuals, small groups and more formal teaching sessions in addition to being trained as a simulation training faculty member whilst in post. The post-holders will be expected to participate in student induction sessions and assessment sessions alongside the other members of the education team. A familiarity with the department can be gained early on in the post, so that teaching within the Labour Ward setting/Clinics/Theatre can be maximized.
A variety of clinical sessions are provided within the job plan as per departmental requirements, and it is expected that these will provide the post-holder with valuable clinical experience as well as providing an opportunity to deliver clinical teaching.
