Gateshead College is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and experienced Fashion Design and Communication specialist to join our Art and Design department on a fixed-term basis to provide maternity cover. The successful candidate will plan, deliver and assess engaging and ambitious learning across our Fashion Design and Communication provision. You will support learners to develop the creative, technical and professional skills needed to progress into higher education, apprenticeships or employment within the fashion and wider creative industries.

You will work with learners across a range of levels and abilities, helping them to develop individual creative identities while building strong practical, research, communication and presentation skills. Teaching may include:

  • Fashion design research and concept development
  • Drawing and visual communication for fashion
  • Fashion illustration
  • Garment construction and production skills
  • Pattern cutting and garment development
  • Textile experimentation and surface design
  • Styling, art direction and image-making
  • Fashion photography and moving image
  • Branding and fashion promotion
  • Editorial design and digital content creation
  • Fashion communication and social media
  • Portfolio development and presentation
  • Contextual research and understanding of contemporary fashion practice

You will encourage learners to explore creative ideas through experimentation, problem-solving and reflection. You will support them to respond confidently to project briefs, communicate their concepts clearly and produce resolved outcomes that reflect their individual interests and progression goals. You will also be responsible for assessing learner work, providing clear and constructive feedback, monitoring progress and contributing to a positive, inclusive and professional studio environment.

As part of the wider Art and Design team, you will contribute to curriculum planning, internal verification, standardisation, learner recruitment, exhibitions, progression activities and wider departmental projects.

Skills and experience

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:

  • Strong specialist knowledge and practical experience within Fashion Design, Fashion Communication or a related creative discipline
  • Experience of supporting learners through the full creative process, from initial research and concept development to final production and presentation
  • Confidence teaching a range of practical, visual and communication-based fashion skills

Experience of teaching and assessing UAL Art and Design qualifications at Levels 2 and 3 would be advantageous. Experience in one or more of the following areas would also be beneficial:

  • Pattern cutting and garment construction
  • Fashion illustration
  • Fashion photography and styling
  • Fashion promotion and branding
  • Adobe Creative Cloud, including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign
  • Digital content creation and social media
  • Sustainable and ethical fashion practice
  • Portfolio preparation for higher education and employment
