An NHS healthcare organisation in the North of England is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Technician to support its estates function during a period of significant operational change. The Trust currently has electrical leadership in place and is looking to appoint a senior mechanical specialist to act as a technical lead within estates. This role will provide expert oversight, support planned preventative maintenance (PPM) activity and help relieve capacity pressures within the internal team.
Key responsibilities:
- Provide senior technical leadership within NHS estates, with a mechanical specialism
- Act as subject‑matter expert in one or more of the following areas: Medical gases, Lifts, Ventilation systems, Water and plumbing systems
- Support delivery and oversight of planned preventative maintenance (PPM) programmes
- Ensure compliance with relevant Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs)
- Work closely with estates teams to manage workload, reduce pressure on internal resources and support service continuity
- Be fully on site for the first three months, with scope for reduced on‑site presence thereafter
Requirements:
- Proven NHS experience, ideally within estates or facilities management
- Strong mechanical engineering background, potentially from an advanced trade (e.g. plumbing or mechanical engineering)
- Experience working within NHS estates environments
- Good working knowledge of PPM and HTM requirements
Other factors, including specific specialisms and contractual details, can be discussed for the right candidate.
This role has been created due to a significant volume of estates work that cannot be sustainably managed by the internal team alone. Bringing in an experienced senior interim will help increase capacity, reduce staff pressure, and ensure critical compliance and maintenance activity continues safely and effectively.
