Working Animals International (the new name for SPANA) is a global charity for the working animals of the world. Since our foundation in 1923, we have worked across Africa, Asia and Latin America to support the welfare of working animals in greatest need. Horses, donkeys, mules, camels and other animals are the quiet, driving force behind countless communities, helping millions of people earn a living and access food, water and transport yet their welfare is often overlooked.
That's why we work with a network of partners around the world to increase access to essential veterinary treatment. We also support owners as they develop the knowledge and skills to look after their animals with confidence and care while inspiring the next generation to do the same. We help communities prepare for and respond to emergencies, from droughts to earthquakes, providing urgent relief to animals in crisis. And we campaign globally for policy change to create lasting improvements in welfare standards.
The need for our work has never been greater, and this demand will only increase in the years ahead. The impact of the climate crisis, the increase in poverty levels and instability in many regions will be particularly hard on working animals and the communities that rely on them. The World Bank has estimated that, by 2030, the climate crisis could push over 120 million more people into poverty. Working animals are intrinsically linked to the global shift we’re seeing. We anticipate that the demands on working animals will grow exponentially.
We are working to improve the quality of life for working animals at a greater scale than ever before. Together, we're building a world where working animals are healthy and valued, communities are stronger and livelihoods are more secure. This is a pivotal moment to join the Board of Working Animals International and play a vital role in improving the welfare of working animals worldwide.
We are seeking an experienced HR/People/Change Trustee to join our Board. The successful candidate will bring significant executive‑level experience as an HR or People Director, with a strong track record of Board/Exec‑level engagement and deep expertise in organisational development and change management. You will also be passionate about creating meaningful, lasting impact for working animals globally.
