We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Interim Director of Midwifery to take on a critical leadership position across a multi-site maternity service. This is a pivotal assignment, ensuring the continued delivery of safe, high-quality maternity and neonatal care during a period of heightened scrutiny and operational challenge.

The Role

Reporting at executive level, you will provide visible, strategic, and operational leadership across all sites, ensuring services remain safe, effective, and responsive to the needs of a diverse population. A key element of the role will be developing a strong understanding of the differing demographics and population needs across the organisation’s footprint, using this insight to shape and inform service delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain service stability and performance, ensuring all aspects of maternity services remain on track.
  • Provide oversight and assurance on patient safety, proactively identifying and addressing risks and concerns.
  • Lead delivery against the outcomes of an expected CQC inspection taking place prior to commencement, ensuring improvements are driven in line with expected standards.
  • Act on inspection findings and recommendations, ensuring timely and effective implementation of required actions.
  • Navigate and respond to a high deprivation index, addressing inequalities and ensuring equitable outcomes across communities.
  • Engage with and respond to internal concerns, fostering a culture of openness, safety, and continuous improvement.

Ideal Candidate

We are looking for a credible and experienced Interim Director of Midwifery who can quickly establish authority and build confidence across the organisation. You will bring:

  • Proven experience operating at Band 9 (or equivalent) level.
  • A strong track record in quality, safety, and governance within maternity services.
  • Experience working across complex, multi-site environments.
  • Confidence leading organisations through regulatory scrutiny (including CQC).
  • A deep understanding of health inequalities and population health challenges.
  • A well-established background in coaching and facilitation at a senior level.
