Overview: Senior Engineer position for Gateley Smithers Purslow, full time, based in the Southeast. This is a busy and varied role providing support to local and national Engineering teams on a wide range of projects, including structural surveys and structural designs for residential, commercial and industrial properties, as well as providing advice to the insurance sector and assisting with regional frameworks. The Senior Engineer supports the Engineering Line Manager and is responsible for handling projects within own level of authority and providing training and guidance to supporting team members.
Responsibilities:
- Use a range of software to develop detailed structural designs as well as hand calculations.
- Undertake technical and feasibility studies including organising site investigations.
- Liaise with clients and professionals including contractors and architects.
- Prepare reports, contract documents, and manage tenders.
- Provide technical advice to clients.
- Obtain planning and/or buildings regulation approval.
- Monitor and inspect work undertaken by contractors.
- Resolve design and development problems.
- Manage budgets and project resources.
- Ensure all projects comply with legal requirements including CDM2015, Party Wall, Listed Buildings.
- Assess sustainability and environmental impact of projects.
- Undertake large value projects independently with knowledge of professional consultancy services.
- Promote the company’s services to secure projects and enhance the Gateley Smithers Purslow brand.
- Assist directors with training and development of the engineering team.
- Provide supervision and support to Graduates and Engineers to promote knowledge and understanding.
- Inspect/supervise construction on site under contract, prepare interim and final accounts, and manage claims and practical completion.
- Comply with the company’s administrative, personnel procedures and Health & Safety regulations.

The team is a multi-disciplinary independent private practice established in 1978, specializing in civil and structural engineering, building surveying, cost consultancy, architecture and planning, insurance claims, and heritage conservation. The firm includes Chartered Building Surveyors, Chartered Structural Engineers, and Architects operating across the UK within the insurance market. Gateley Smithers Purslow holds an LR ISO 9001 Quality Management System and has Investors in People Platinum status.
Person Requirements:
- MEng (Hons) in Structural Engineering.
- Experience and knowledge of consulting engineering, surveying, architectural and planning practices, with awareness of current statutory requirements and guidelines.
- Experience in negotiation, supervisory and leadership roles.
- Experience meeting deadlines and budgets on large-scale projects.
- Strong mathematical, scientific and IT skills.
- Ability to think methodically and manage projects.
- Problem-solving skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation.
