£30,000–£32,000 per annum plus bonus and fantastic benefits. Approx 40 hours per week across 5 days. Seasonal shift pattern: 07:30–16:30 (April–September) and 08:00–16:00 (October–March), with rotational weekend working required. A driving licence is required for this role.

From aerial tree work to ground-based operations, you’ll ensure our landscapes remain safe, healthy, and inspiring for both visitors and wildlife. This is a hands-on role where no two days are the same—combining practical arboriculture, machinery operation, and conservation-focused work, all while contributing to an exceptional visitor experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out aerial arboricultural work and ground-based tree felling
  • Maintain and develop woodland and grounds across the estate
  • Operate machinery including tractors, trailers, chainsaws, and chippers
  • Support woodland projects, events, and wider estate activities
  • Maintain and care for trees to the highest horticultural standards
  • Ensure woodland habitats are managed to encourage biodiversity
  • Complete tree work identified through inspections and reports
  • Follow strict health and safety procedures at all times

  • Proven arboriculture experience, including aerial and ground-based tree work
  • Relevant chainsaw and climbing certifications
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Experience using arboricultural machinery and equipment

Where you’ll be working: The Gardens Team (Gardens, Edibles, Nursery, Turf & Woodlands) are dedicated to understanding, developing, curating, protecting, and managing The Newt's living collection of plants, in an environment where visitors are encouraged to experience and learn about plants, garden history, habitats and to enjoy the gardens. The team run several events and workshops for our visitors over the year which include the popular daily garden tours. The Woodland Team are responsible for the care and maintenance of the tree collections across the estate. These include specimen trees and a range of different woodland ecosystems. The team use a range of machinery and resources to maintain these areas and ensure the trees are safe and woodland habitat is managed to encourage and sustain wildlife.
