The Role and About You
If you are an experienced heavy engineering professional ready to take the next step into a team leadership role, this is an opportunity to combine your technical expertise with responsibility for planning, organising and leading a skilled engineering team. As Team Leader, you will be a hands-on leader, spending part of your time working alongside the team and using your mechanical expertise, while also taking ownership of the day-to-day coordination and delivery of the department. You will be responsible for ensuring the team is organised, productive and working safely, while meeting operational, quality and performance targets. You will act as a key point of contact between the engineering team, senior management and wider stakeholders, providing clear updates, debriefs and feedback on performance, progress and any issues that need addressing. Your responsibilities will include:
- Planning and organising the daily workload and allocation of resources across the team.
- Working hands-on alongside the engineering team, carrying out maintenance, inspection, fault-finding and repair work on freight wagons.
- Providing technical support and guidance to team members, ensuring work is completed safely and to the required quality standards.
- Monitoring progress against operational and engineering targets and taking action where required.
- Conducting team briefings and debriefs, ensuring priorities, expectations and key information are clearly communicated.
- Providing regular updates and debriefing senior managers and stakeholders on operational performance, progress, issues and achievements.
- Supporting coaching, development and performance management within the team.
- Identifying opportunities for continuous improvement and helping implement more efficient ways of working.
- Ensuring company procedures, health and safety requirements and quality standards are consistently followed.
- Managing day-to-day issues and escalating significant operational or technical concerns appropriately.
- Providing leadership and continuity during periods of holiday, sickness or other absence, ensuring the department remains effectively resourced and operational.
- Supporting the wider management team with planning, coordination and departmental priorities.
You will ideally have a strong mechanical engineering background, with experience in heavy plant, rolling stock, agricultural machinery, heavy vehicles, bus or another comparable heavy engineering environment.
Just as importantly, you will have the confidence and communication skills to lead people, organise workloads and take ownership of departmental performance. Previous experience of team coordination, coaching, supervision, shift leadership or planning would be highly advantageous.
This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced engineer who is ready to move into a leadership position without losing the hands‑on element of the role.
