We are seeking an experienced Product Range Design Engineer to join a busy engineering environment on an initial 12-month contract. The successful contractor will ideally have experience within food processing, food manufacturing or process engineering, with a strong understanding of engineering drawings, P&IDs and technical documentation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and expand existing product ranges in line with customer and engineering requirements.
  • Review and work from technical data sheets, specifications and engineering documentation.
  • Interpret and understand P&IDs, process diagrams and engineering drawings.
  • Develop and modify designs based on existing engineering standards and specifications.
  • Review existing products and identify opportunities for design improvements, standardisation and range development.
  • Produce and update technical design documentation and associated product information.
  • Work closely with engineering and project teams to ensure designs meet the required specifications.
  • Coordinate with third-party designers and suppliers where required.
  • Review externally produced design information and ensure it aligns with technical requirements.
  • Support the transfer of technical and design information between internal teams and external parties.
  • Attend site visits where required to understand existing equipment, installations and customer requirements.
  • Carry out site measurements and use existing site information to support product development.
  • Review 3D design information and visual content produced using SolidWorks or similar CAD software.
  • Ensure designs are practical, manufacturable and suitable for use within process and food manufacturing environments.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation and records of design changes.

Essential Experience

  • Previous experience as a Design Engineer, Product Design Engineer, Mechanical Design Engineer or similar.
  • Proven experience developing, modifying or improving engineered products or product ranges.
  • Strong ability to work from technical data sheets, specifications and engineering documentation.
  • Good understanding of P&IDs and process diagrams.
  • Ability to confidently read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Strong mechanical engineering knowledge.
  • Excellent attention to detail, particularly when working to technical specifications.
  • Experience working with external designers, suppliers or engineering partners.
  • Strong communication and coordination skills.

Desirable Experience

  • Food processing or food manufacturing experience.
  • Previous experience working with major food manufacturing clients.
  • Experience using or interpreting SolidWorks models and 3D design content.
  • Experience within process engineering environments.
  • Understanding of hygienic design and equipment used within food processing applications.

The Ideal Contractor

This role would suit an experienced designer who enjoys product development and range expansion, rather than purely project-based design work. You will need to be technically strong, commercially aware and confident working from specifications and engineering information. A key part of the role will be understanding how individual products fit into wider process systems and being able to interpret P&IDs, drawings and technical documentation. You should also be comfortable reviewing design information produced by third parties, identifying discrepancies or improvements and ensuring the finished design meets the required specification. The ability to work independently as a contractor, manage your own workload and communicate effectively with engineering teams, designers and suppliers will be important.
