The Role and About You:
We are currently recruiting for a Night Shift Yard Protection Operative to join a busy rail depot in Selhurst. This is a safety-critical role where you will play an important part in protecting colleagues working on trains and within the depot. Working 35 hours per week on a Sunday-Saturday roster, from 21:45pm to 04:45am, you will be responsible for operating Controlled Track Switches (CTS) to safely de-energise and re-energise the 750V DC conductor rail equipment within depot sidings. This ensures that work can be carried out safely and protects personnel from the risk of electrocution.
Alongside your Yard Protection duties, you will lead and support teams responsible for maintaining a safe, clean and high-quality train environment. You will help coordinate day-to-day depot activities, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently and to the required standards. The role will involve:
- Operating Controlled Track Switches and contactor panel equipment
- Setting up and briefing Safe Systems of Work
- Supervising depot activities
- Coordinating train cleaning, servicing and maintenance
- Supporting allocated staff
- Monitoring quality standards
- Inspecting trains and infrastructure
- Supervising contractors
- Reporting defects, incidents and safety concerns
You will work closely with internal teams to coordinate operational activities while ensuring Health & Safety procedures and Local Safety Instructions are followed at all times. You will also carry out quality and in-process checks, act as the site's Fire Precautions Manager and designated First Aider, and undertake any additional duties for which you are trained and competent.
To succeed in this role, you will need previous experience working in a safety-critical environment. Experience within the railway, aviation, airports, engineering or a similar industry would be highly relevant. Previous Supervisor, Team Leader or equivalent experience is desirable, as is experience as a Train Carer. You will need strong communication and leadership skills, excellent attention to detail and the ability to follow safety procedures accurately. You must also be comfortable undertaking physical and manual work when required and be a reliable team player who is willing to support other Train Presentation activities when Yard Protection duties are not required.
As this is a safety-critical position, you will be expected to take an active role in maintaining high safety standards, including participating in safety meetings, briefings and training and ensuring important safety information is communicated effectively to the wider team.
