Are you an experienced Rolling Stock Engineer with a passion for fleet performance, reliability and technical problem solving?

We're recruiting for a Technical Engineer to support the safe, reliable and efficient operation of a significant UK passenger fleet.

This position offers the opportunity to take ownership of fleet performance activities, investigate complex technical issues and drive engineering improvements that positively impact reliability, availability and operational performance.

Working within a collaborative engineering environment, you'll analyse fleet data, identify root causes of recurring defects and develop practical engineering solutions that improve fleet performance while supporting long-term maintenance strategies.

The Role

You'll work closely with engineering, maintenance and operational teams to monitor fleet performance, support technical investigations and provide engineering assurance across a busy operational environment.

This is a varied role where you'll combine technical analysis with practical engineering support, helping to maximise fleet reliability while contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support fleet reliability, availability and operational performance against agreed performance targets.
  • Monitor fleet defects, failures and engineering trends, identifying opportunities for reliability improvement.
  • Investigate recurring technical faults using structured root cause analysis techniques.
  • Analyse engineering data and performance indicators to identify reliability risks and emerging trends.
  • Develop recommendations and engineering solutions to improve fleet performance and reduce repeat failures.
  • Work alongside depot, production and maintenance teams to resolve in-service technical issues.
  • Support engineering assurance activities and provide technical sign-off within delegated authority.
  • Contribute to short, medium and long-term fleet improvement plans.
  • Produce technical reports and performance analysis to support engineering decision making.
  • Liaise with operational stakeholders and engineering teams to deliver technical solutions across the fleet.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives, reliability growth and lifecycle cost reduction where appropriate.

About You

We're looking for someone who enjoys solving technical challenges and using engineering data to improve fleet performance.

You'll ideally have

  • Previous Rolling Stock experience within technical support, fleet engineering, reliability, maintainability or reactive maintenance.
  • Passenger Rolling Stock experience is desirable.
  • Experience on various systems on modern passenger rolling stock.
  • Excellent fault-finding and root cause investigation skills.
  • Experience analysing technical data, maintenance records and engineering information.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify trends and develop improvement plans.
  • Good knowledge of reliability engineering and continuous improvement principles.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work across multiple engineering and operational teams.
  • Experience producing technical reports and presenting engineering findings would be advantageous.
