Freelance – Quantity Surveyor

Location: Derby (Office-Based)
Duration: 3+ Months (Strong Potential to Extend)
Rate: Competitive – Outside IR35 (Discussed on Application)

We are currently seeking an experienced Freelance Quantity Surveyor to support a growing workload and strong order book for a well-established civil engineering contractor based in the Midlands.

This is an office-based role in Derby, and candidatesmust be happy to attend the office full-time,particularly during the initial stages, to ensure effective collaboration and support.

The Role

As a Quantity Surveyor, you will be responsible for the commercial management of live civil engineering projects. Your duties will include:

  • Financial management of assigned contracts
  • Monthly valuations and cost reporting
  • Placing and managing subcontractor orders
  • Managing variations and change control
  • Ensuring accurate and timely subcontractor payments
  • Supporting procurement, cost control, and contract administration
  • Working closely with the delivery and commercial teams to ensure successful project outcomes
  • This role is required to help manage a high workflow and offers strong potential for extension beyond the initial contract period.

    About You

  • Minimum 3+ years’ experience in a Quantity Surveying role
  • Civil engineering background is essential – applications will only be considered from candidates with experience in:
  • Highways
  • Energy
  • Water
  • Heavy civils / infrastructure
  • Experience on projects such as energy schemes, substations, battery storage, or similar infrastructure works is highly desirable
  • Confident managing subcontractors, project finances, and commercial reporting
  • Proactive, hands-on approach with strong communication skills
  • Comfortable working in an office-based team environment
