Are you an experienced engineer working in rolling stock, ready to take the next step in your career? If you’re looking to expand your expertise in systems engineering or assurance, and want the freedom to work more independently on a nationally significant programme, this could be your perfect move.

A leading UK rail organisation is delivering the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) across their operational fleet—this is one of the most ambitious train control upgrades in the country. This is your opportunity to grow into a specialist role, shape the future of digital signalling, and gain exposure to complex ETCS integration and rolling stock systems assurance.

Why This Role Is Made for You

As the Rolling Stock Systems Assurance Lead – ERTMS Programme, you won’t just be supporting—you’ll be trusted to lead. Whether you’ve worked under supervision in assurance or have solid ETCS or systems knowledge from rolling stock projects, we’ll support your development into an independent system assurance expert. You’ll be hands-on with real-world challenges, from hazard management to regulatory engagement, and help deliver a train control system that includes cab-signalling, automatic train protection, GSM-R, and updated operating rules.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Lead the development of assurance plans for rolling stock systems
  • Support APIS and PIU approvals, safety risk assessments
  • Collaborate with ORR, Network Rail, and other stakeholders on ETCS and train control compliance
  • Participate in HazIDs, workshops, and assurance meetings
  • Help shape the assurance framework across technical, safety, and regulatory domains
  • Promote a culture of safety and quality across the programme

What You’ll Bring

We’re looking for someone who’s ready to grow and take the lead on a major systems programme. You might be:

  • A rolling stock engineer with strong technical foundations and a desire to specialise in systems assurance
  • Someone with existing experience in ETCS, train control, or systems integration, looking to take on more responsibility
  • An engineer who’s worked under supervision in assurance and is now ready to lead

Bonus (but not essential)

  • Experience in major rail programmes (E.g. Digital Railway, Crossrail, HS2)
  • Familiarity with Network Rail’s ESAC and 4-SP frameworks
  • Degree Qualified, Professional Registered or Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working toward it

Personal Attributes

  • Curious, methodical, and eager to learn
  • Confident communicator and collaborator
  • Ready to take ownership and work independently

What’s In It for You

We know that great engineers thrive when they’re trusted, supported, and given room to grow. That’s why we offer:

  • Competitive pay
  • Enhanced maternity & paternity pay
  • Flexible benefits to support your work-life balance—from health reimbursements to car savings
  • A clear path to develop into a subject matter expert in systems assurance, ETCS, and train control
