This is a long-term freelance opportunity on a major Local Authority highways framework, delivering live highways and civil engineering upgrades across Bedfordshire and surrounding council areas. It’s proper delivery work, not firefighting. Strong pipeline, settled commercial team, and a client that knows what they’re doing. You’ll be site-based 4 days per week in Bedford, with 1 day working from home.
You’ll be embedded within the commercial team, owning your packages and running the day-to-day commercial management of highways schemes delivered under NEC Option C. This is a role for someone who likes being close to the job, working with engineers, planners and delivery teams, and keeping things commercially tight without constant drama. Day to day, you’ll be:
- Procuring and managing subcontractors
- Handling change under NEC (early warnings, compensation events, assessments)
- Managing payments, valuations and subcontract accounts
- Supporting monthly CVRs and forecasting
- Keeping commercial records clean, defensible and audit-ready
- Working closely with the site team to keep cost, programme and scope aligned
There’s proper support around you. You’re not being dropped in to “sort a mess”.
This will suit someone who:
- Comes from a Tier 1 contractor background
- Has solid NEC3 or NEC4 Option C experience
- Has worked on highways or civil engineering projects
- Is comfortable running packages and dealing directly with subcontractors
- Wants stability, consistency and a long-term run of work
- QS or SQS level both considered depending on experience.
Rates & Take-Home:
- Quantity Surveyor: Up to ÂŁ450 per day (Inside IR35), Approx ÂŁ1,300 take-home per week, Around ÂŁ67.6k equivalent per annum (after tax)
- Senior Quantity Surveyor: Up to ÂŁ550 per day (Inside IR35), Approx ÂŁ1,550 take-home per week, Around ÂŁ81k equivalent per annum (after tax)
That’s significantly stronger take-home than most permanent roles, with the flexibility that comes with contracting and the option to move on to other frameworks in the future if and when you choose.
Why This Role?
- Long-term, stable framework work
- Proper highways projects with a clear pipeline
- Strong commercial structure already in place
- Realistic workload and expectations
- Excellent take-home without perm politics
If you’re a QS or SQS in highways or civils and want something steady, well-run and financially worthwhile, this is well worth a look.
Ganymede is committed to creating a diverse workforce and is an equal opportunities employer. We welcome applications from all suitably qualified persons regardless of age, disability, gender, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.
