We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed Project Officer to join the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) Cymru/Wales team. The role will help to deliver practical conservation actions designed to improve Welsh Curlew breeding success and chick productivity.
Responsibilities include:
- Coordinating and implementing habitat management interventions outlined in the Wales Action Plan for the Recovery of Curlew (2021).
- Leading monitoring and data collection efforts.
- Engaging stakeholders to raise awareness and encourage curlew conservation.
Location: Working remotely - Mid Wales/travel
Hours: 5 days/week (37.5 hours)
Salary: £27,000-£29,000 (depending on experience)

The Gwald y Gylfinir Project, funded through the Nature Networks Fund (Round 5) via the Welsh Government and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, is a major initiative dedicated to safeguarding the future of the Eurasian Curlew (Numenius arquata). This project seeks to build and strengthen targeted conservation efforts across Mid-Wales, focusing on three core areas – Montgomeryshire, North Radnorshire, surrounding areas of Ireland Moor, Gladestry – to halt and reverse population decline through effective habitat management and community collaboration.
Person Specification
Essential
- Practical experience of curlew conservation or similar bird species recovery projects.
- Team player; approachable, flexible, engaging, enthusiastic, welcoming to all.
- Good knowledge of species monitoring and surveying techniques.
- Experience working with land managers and farmers and an understanding of farm businesses and pressures of interactions between farming and conservation objectives.
- Practical experience of working with contractors and supervising contracts.
- Proven experience in project and budget management.
- Excellent communication, public speaking and networking skills, able to negotiate with, persuade and influence a wide range of stakeholders.
- Excellent IT skills including use of Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, Excel, SharePoint and PowerPoint.
- Ability to undertake demanding fieldwork in remote areas for long hours in poor weather.
- Able to work independently, prioritise workload and meet deadlines.
- Full UK driving licence, passport and use of own vehicle.
Desirable
- Relevant degree or at least 2 years experience.
- Good understanding of breeding Curlew and the challenges they face.
- GVC Drone License Qualification.
- Experience of developing and delivering training materials, community engagement and working with a wide variety of groups.
- Proficient in GIS software (ArcGIS/QGIS).
- Understanding of GPS software.
- Working towards BTO ringing licence for waders.
- Experience meeting regulatory standards e.g. GDPR and Health & Safety.
- Experience supervising and motivating volunteers.
- Welsh speaking or willing to learn basic Welsh.
