An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Trainee Estimator to join our team. The Trainee Estimator will be trained in the preparation of estimates for civil engineering tenders. As the Trainee Estimator you will be trained to read and review drawings, undertake measurement and BoQ production, send out material and sub-contract enquiries and then how to price works from first principles. The role will develop into an Estimator role and could also include obtaining qualifications/degree.
Key Accountabilities include:
- Log Tender Information: Ensure all tender details are recorded in the system, including obtaining a Tender Number and confirming the Estimating Administrator has processed it.
- Review Tender Documents: Carefully read and understand the requirements of the tender documents.
- Attend Client Meetings: Participate in client tender briefings, site visits, and interviews.
- Raise and Distribute Queries: Raise formal queries regarding the tender and distribute the client’s responses or any updates to the tender documents to the necessary stakeholders.
- Collaborate with Estimating Administrator: Work with the Estimating Administrator to ensure that estimating files are regularly updated with any new information.
- Assist in Subcontractor and Supplier Enquiries: Assist in preparing and managing subcontractor and supplier enquiries to support tender submissions and assist with the analysis of the responses.
- Support Measurement and Quantification: If required, assist with measuring and quantifying tender drawings and creating a Bill of Quantities, or collaborate with external teams to ensure this is completed on time.
- Support Accurate Data for Tender Build-ups: Support in ensuring that all data used in preparing tenders (e.g., labour, plant, materials, and preliminaries) is up-to-date and relevant for the specific delivery period.
- Verify Supplier and Subcontractor Quotations: Check that any received quotes from suppliers or subcontractors meet the tender requirements (validity, approvals, technical specifications, etc.).
- Build Estimating Rates: Assist in building estimating rates from scratch, ensuring all data is accurate and presented in the correct format for tender submissions.
- Collaborate with Planner: Work with the planner to align on programme outputs, overall timelines, and temporary works allowances where necessary.
- Support Tender Settlement: Help present the estimate during the tender settlement process and assist with incorporating any necessary adjustments.
- Follow Bid Governance Process: Comply with bid governance procedures, help produce necessary data and templates for governance reviews, and support obtaining approval to submit the tender.
- Prepare Final Tender Submission Estimate: Contribute to producing a final estimate that meets the Employer's required format.
- Assist in Handover to Commercial and Operations Teams: Support the transition of estimating data to commercial, operations, and procurement teams for any contract wins during the contract handover and start-up process.
Experience/Knowledge: Experience in a similar role - desirable.
Skills: IT literate, good communication skills both verbal and written, ability to work on own initiative, organised, pro-active with a positive attitude and willing to learn, self-motivated and enthusiastic, good organisational and planning skills.
Qualifications: A-level, HND (or similar) in Maths, Physics or Engineering – desirable.
