An established environmental consultancy seeks an experienced Principal Consultant to lead and expand its Peatland and Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) service area across the UK and Ireland. This role requires strong technical expertise, leadership experience, and a proven record in operational delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead peatland restoration and NbS projects from initial feasibility, surveys, and design stages through to on-site project management and delivery.
  • Act as Technical Lead on peatland and NbS initiatives, ensuring high-quality outcomes across all phases.
  • Prepare and manage technical proposals and tenders, including project scoping, costing, and scheduling.
  • Secure, manage, and retain client relationships, meeting contractual and commercial obligations.
  • Manage multidisciplinary project teams, including resource allocation, scheduling, and performance management.
  • Oversee compliance with Construction Design Management (CDM) regulations, planning, and consenting requirements.
  • Provide private water supply risk assessments, monitoring programs, and reporting to clients.
  • Develop Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR) chapters covering hydrogeology, geology, and soils.
  • Identify and advise clients on private and public funding opportunities for peatland and NbS projects.
  • Promote cross-disciplinary collaboration between hydrology, geotechnical, and ecology teams.

Requirements

  • Honours or Master's degree in Environmental Science, Hydrology, Geology, or a closely related field.
  • Proven experience managing peatland restoration projects, with working knowledge of the Peatland Code and Peatland ACTION processes.
  • Track record in successful proposal writing, tender management, and contract delivery within consultancy.
  • Strong commercial acumen and business development skills with an existing professional network.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, develop staff, and manage operational delivery.
  • In-depth understanding of UK and Irish environmental regulations, including CDM and planning laws.
  • Experience producing technical documentation for EIAR submissions.
  • Skilled in stakeholder engagement across private, public, and third-sector organisations.
  • Chartered or actively working towards chartered status with a relevant professional body.
  • Full UK or equivalent driving license.
