We are currently recruiting for an experienced Environmental Health Officer (Private Sector Housing) to support a busy and proactive Local Authority team in the South West.
This is an excellent opportunity for an EHO with strong Private Sector Housing experience to join a friendly and supportive team responsible for regulating the private rented sector, improving housing standards, and protecting public health.
The Role
You will be responsible for a varied caseload covering a range of Private Sector Housing and Environmental Health functions, including:
- Investigating complaints relating to housing conditions within the private rented sector
- Carrying out inspections of licensed residential accommodation and Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs)
- Conducting property surveys and assessments to support the HMO licensing process
- Producing schedules of work and ensuring compliance with relevant housing legislation
- Taking enforcement action where necessary to improve housing standards
- Supporting wider Environmental Health functions, including:
- Statutory nuisance investigations
- Public health matters
- Drainage issues
- Unauthorised encampments
- Supporting landlord registration and licensing initiatives
Requirements
- A Degree in Environmental Health or equivalent qualification
- Previous Local Authority experience within Private Sector Housing
- Strong knowledge of Housing Act legislation and HMO regulation
- Experience conducting inspections and producing enforcement notices
- Excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to manage a busy and varied workload independently
- A proactive approach to enforcement and problem‑solving
