The role
As a Linux Engineering Manager, you will lead a team responsible for delivering and maintaining the core Linux operating systems (RHEL and Ubuntu) that power G-Research’s compute platforms. You will oversee the entire Linux platform stack - from OS builds and provisioning systems, through to database services, custom tooling and observability frameworks. This role requires balancing technical leadership, people management and strategic platform ownership, ensuring that our Linux infrastructure remains consistent, scalable and secure. You will provide direction on platform architecture, drive adoption of DevOps and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices and partner with cross-functional teams to deliver secure, automated and reliable Linux services across the organisation.
What you’ll do:
- Lead, mentor and grow a high-performing Linux Engineering team
- Define and deliver the Linux platform strategy aligned to research and business needs
- Oversee core OS build, release and lifecycle management systems
- Champion automation, Infrastructure as Code (Ansible), and CI/CD practices
- Drive Linux security initiatives – hardening, patching and compliance automation
- Collaborate across research, development and infrastructure to enhance reliability, scale and observability
Who are we looking for?
- Proven leadership experience in infrastructure or systems engineering
- Deep Linux expertise (RHEL, Ubuntu) – internals, performance tuning, kernel, and filesystems
- Strong background in automation and provisioning (Ansible, PXE, cloud-init, etc.)
- Awareness of Linux security, compliance and eBPF for observability and performance
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
