About the Company

Our client is a market leader in special-purpose process systems, specialising in solutions for the FMCG, pharmaceutical, automotive and industrial packaging sectors.

With a strong reputation for innovation, technical expertise and environmental sustainability, they design and deliver cutting-edge, bespoke systems for clients across the UK and worldwide.

They are seeking an experienced Software Controls Engineer to join their team on an initial 3–6-month contract.

The Role

This is a hands-on, project-driven contract role covering the full project lifecycle, from initial concept and controls software design through to testing, installation and on-site commissioning.

The successful Software Controls Engineer will work closely with the engineering and project teams to develop robust automation and control solutions for a range of technically challenging installations.

You will be involved in new-build projects and may also provide support with existing or legacy systems where required.

The role will suit an experienced Controls Engineer who is comfortable working independently, managing project responsibilities and adapting to changing priorities.

Flexibility to travel to customer sites across the UK and internationally is required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and implement PLC, HMI and SCADA control systems from initial concept through to completion.
  • Develop controls software using Siemens TIA Portal, with Rockwell Allen Bradley and Mitsubishi experience desirable.
  • Interpret project requirements and contribute to the development of control philosophies and software solutions.
  • Produce technical documentation, including Functional Design Specifications, software documentation and O&M manuals.
  • Work closely with electrical, mechanical, process and project engineering teams to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Support software testing, debugging and fault-finding throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Attend and support Factory Acceptance Testing and Site Acceptance Testing activities.
  • Complete on-site installation support, commissioning and troubleshooting at customer locations.
  • Provide remote and on-site technical assistance for field-based issues where required.
  • Work across multiple projects and manage priorities to meet agreed deadlines.
  • Ensure control systems are developed and delivered in line with relevant safety, quality and compliance requirements.
  • Support the use and improvement of software standards and libraries to promote greater consistency across projects.
  • Liaise with customers and site teams during testing, commissioning and handover.
  • Travel across the UK, Europe and worldwide, depending on project requirements.

Person Specification

  • Proven experience as a Software Controls, Controls or Automation Engineer.
  • Strong PLC, HMI and SCADA programming experience, with Siemens TIA Portal essential.
  • Experience with Allen Bradley and/or Mitsubishi systems would be advantageous.
  • Background in special-purpose machinery, process systems, motion control or other regulated industries.
  • Experience taking projects from controls software design through to FAT, SAT and on-site commissioning.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the flexibility to work independently, manage priorities and travel to UK and international sites.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Software Controls Engineer to work on varied and technically challenging projects across a range of industries, with the opportunity to support systems from initial concept through to successful site commissioning.
