The client is a leading UK food manufacturing organisation, who supply to major UK retailers. Still family owned, they have a rich history having operated for over 60 years. With state of the art manufacturing facilities including in Yorkshire, they are looking to expand their operations in the near future as well.

The role involves being a proactive Health & Safety Officer to ensure everyone in the company complies with health and safety legislation. You will also be responsible for establishing policies that will create and maintain a safe workplace.

As a Health & Safety Officer, you must have excellent attention to detail to identify hazards. You will also be able to discover opportunities for improving conditions and execute various safety programs. The ability to communicate guidelines to a multidisciplinary workforce is essential.

Key day to day responsibilities:

  • Partner with senior and line managers to embed H&S best practice through coaching, policy guidance, and SOP/risk assessment development.
  • Design and implement site-wide H&S plans, policies, and procedures in line with legal requirements; lead monthly H&S Committee meetings.
  • Conduct regular workplace, equipment, and statutory inspections (lifting equipment, FLT, fire extinguishers, ladders, racking) and drive corrective action plans.
  • Lead incident/accident investigations, root-cause analysis, and prevention initiatives; maintain the incident reporting system and action plans.
  • Deliver H&S inductions, toolbox talks, and training for employees, visitors, and contractors; update SOPs and SDS/COSHH documentation.
  • Monitor compliance through audits (with HR/Technical teams), KPI tracking, and emergency procedure development; maintain Fire Log Book records.

Person Specification:

  • Previous Health & Safety experience in manufacturing – ideally FMCG or food process.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 14001, and 45001.
  • Experience with risk assessments, incident investigations, and reporting.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, especially Excel, Word, and SharePoint.
  • Good communication and influencing skills.
  • Hands-on, proactive, and confident working in a busy operational setting.

Qualifications:

  • IOSH Managing Safely.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate.
  • Internal Auditor training.
  • Experience with COSHH, HACCP, food hygiene (GMP/GHP) etc.
