This key role forms part of the pre-contract and work-winning team, responsible for producing accurate, technically sound, and commercially robust cost estimates for a wide range of electrical works — including refurbishments, upgrades, and installation projects within water management and industrial environments. You’ll play a vital part in supporting the company’s strategy to expand its in-house electrical delivery capability and strengthen its position within the utilities market.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for electrical installation and refurbishment works, including labour, materials, plant, and subcontract elements.
  • Review and interpret tender documentation, drawings, and technical specifications to determine project requirements.
  • Carry out cable sizing, voltage drop, and protection calculations to support pricing and design assumptions.
  • Work closely with mechanical and electrical engineering teams to ensure alignment with installation methods and delivery programmes.
  • Source and evaluate third-party quotations for MCCs, PLCs, and specialist control equipment.
  • Contribute to clear and persuasive proposal submissions, including technical write-ups, risk registers, and commercial summaries.
  • Identify cost-saving and value engineering opportunities through structured analysis.
  • Provide full project handovers and ongoing support to delivery teams following contract award.
  • Maintain strong relationships with clients, suppliers, and subcontractors to ensure access to accurate market data and competitive pricing.
  • Support business development activities through proactive tender follow-ups and participation in pre-contract discussions.
  • Assist in developing standard pricing libraries and mentoring junior estimators as the team grows.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Essential:

  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Electrical Engineering or Installation.
  • Strong knowledge of the IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671).
  • Ability to interpret drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
  • Experience preparing detailed electrical cost estimates for industrial or infrastructure projects.
  • Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Office and estimating software.
  • Excellent attention to detail, analytical thinking, and communication skills.
  • Collaborative, team-oriented approach with a drive for continuous improvement.

Desirable:

  • HNC/HND or higher qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience working on projects within the water management, utilities, or power industries.
  • Understanding of low-voltage installation requirements in industrial or hazardous environments.
  • Familiarity with clients such as government bodies, drainage authorities, or water utilities.
  • Experience using Trimble Electrical Designer or similar software tools.
